General EV Conversation
Hi mods, move EV fire risk to new thread?
This may be a big subject and I don't think it should be here in general EV chat, just IMHO.

I just still haven’t seen anything that makes me want to rent an EV other than being able to try out an EV.
....well I just checked several local retailers none of them have one only smoke detectors. Amazon wins again.
Smoke detector is useless as temps approach the freezing point never mind going way into negative numbers. You are absolutely right at best you will get false alarms. Which reminds me I need to get a heat alarm I thought about it at one time then completely forgot.

California thinks just about everything causes cancer even things that are made from non-toxic metals I see the warnings on auto parts all the time it's ridiculous. There is a tiny amount of radioactive material (Americium-241) in most smoke alarms but you get about 1,000,000 times more radiation just sitting there, cosmic rays.
Speaking of rays and such, some people think EVs are bad for your health because you're sitting on batteries the electricity will slowly kill you.
I am getting a heat detector because I have high current in use in the garage. Amost zero chance anything goes wrong (wired everything myself so I know it's good) but less than 0% chance means possible.
Battery packs go through extensive testing, including shooting a giant bolt through them. I know BYD, CATL and Tesla perform this test, the damaged cells then isolate themselves to prevent a fire. They also crash test vehicles to make sure the packs don't explode or catch fire.
If course as more EVs hit the road, we'll have more real world data, but at this point, I feel that there are more chance I'll be killed by a drunk driver than my EVs battery packs catching fire
Houses go up, it happens. It’s a risk anyway. Some mansion burned completely down in this neighborhood down the street and almost took neighbors’ houses with it. Something gas blew.

You gotta love her or leave her. She's like that cocaine alcohol fueled girl I dated in college, knew she was bad for me, but I couldn't leave her

I likely wouldn’t leave my EV charging in the garage when I went away on a trip. I do unplug my charging batteries for my lawn equipment etc when I go away. To me that’s just a reasonable safety precaution.
That being said, if you don't have the ability to charge at home, it's probably better to get a hybrid if fuel costs are your biggest concern
I honestly don’t care what it would cost to charge on a trip, it would never equal the savings of not having to buy gas day to day.
My issue is having there be plenty of chargers with plenty of availability
