I don't (yet) have a Tesla, a situation I will likely remedy soon, but I don't consider them to be appliances at all. I find them to be the very opposite of dull, utilitarian and boring.
To me they are anything but boring, but they are appliances in the sense that they meet the demands of a daily commuter, family hauler, trip car and hitting the throttle for some fun. Also the tech is really cool. I would exclude Model 3, Y Performance and S and X from the the "appliance" title. Although the redesigned Model 3, I'm on the edge of saying it's not an appliance. My Model Y, 100 percent appliance
Dunno about anyone else but my appliances don't put a smile on my face like instant, silent torque and speed does. And my Y is "slow" (it does have the acceleration boost option), my next Y will be even more anti-appliance.

^ That defines our Y to a tee. Yes, it's also fun to drive at times, but that doesn't make it any less a capable appliance.
As soon as you post dictionary definitions you've already lost, those are the internet rules I don't make them.
So today a Nissan Altima caught fire one car away from my daughters Chevy Bolt. Apparently the fire was so hot that fire fighters had to hose down my daughters Bolt and it was steaming
They didn't want her to drive it until it stopped steaming. I told her to have the car inspected and file an insurance claim, don't know if it caused any damage to her battery pack. She did notice that some battery was depleted a little
Nissans are perfectly safe. Car fires happen from time to time.
and they all do issue recalls if it is reproducible problem.
But man oh man, in my neck of the woods in Europe, if EV catches fire, there would be 10,000 articles in an instant and people calling for ban on EV sales.

Oh, same here!
And had her Bolt caught on fire the story would have been about the Bolt, ignoring the fact that an ICE Nissan is what started the fire.
Haha glad I stayed out of that one . Model 3 and Y are appliances, maybe not like a fridge, but an appliance none the less. So is a Camry and RAV4, except Tesla's have a fun factor built in when it comes to straight line performance. They are funner to drive, and technically superior. Drive better, and are more efficient. And are excellent daily commuters. BTW writing this while commuting to work
Model S I wouldn't consider an appliance, it's more a sports/luxury vehicle that has a special place in my heart
"Appliance" in car journalist speak just means something that is practical, I don't see what the pejorative is. An Ariel Atom is not an appliance but would people want to daily that thing?

If someone loves their car they would never call it an appliance.
The reason why is because nobody loves appliances.
My refrigerator looks good but it's just a beast of burden that I have no feelings for and has no character or charm, hence appliance. Lol

It doesn't matter what you want to call it. If it's practical and gets the job done it's an appliance. Cars are practical and are thus generally appliances. You can love a crappy 90's Corolla and it's still an appliance.
The more impractical the car, the less of an appliance it is - because at that point you are catering to the car rather than the other way around. There's a reason people love to joke about Italian cars having a "soul" because of how impractical and unreliable they are.
