It’s a true story, believe it or not. Swiping on a screen to select gears is just dumb.
To you it's dumb who's never done it. To me it's the easiest and most innovative way of shifting and driving. Been doing it for a year and love it. It's funny, if I were to call BMWs shifter dumb (which it is) you would defend it till you ran out of breath. To each his own, so glad Tesla implemented this 👍
I have driven Teslas, don’t like the swiping on the screen for selecting gears, sorry. Has nothing to do with one accident I just think it’s a stupid design. It’s okay that you like it. We need more physical controls back in cars for commonly used controls IMO. I think if you polled most drivers they would say that they would like to see fewer screen based controls not more, certainly that’s the scuttlebutt I hear out there and read in articles and reviews etc.
You don’t like the door handles and Elon sleeps okay at night. He can deal with me not liking swiping for gears too lol

uh, that's not the impression I got you blamed the car.

My point is I thought the shifting in the screen design was dumb before that.
Of course it was operator error, the point is the design of the shifter made the error easier to make. You have to use too much attention to change gears.
It’s like when Anton Yelchin was killed by his Jeep Grand Cherokee. That was his error, but the design of the shifter (which I also had in the same Grand Cherokee) was really dumb which made the error easier to make. Chrysler changed the design.
You’re not going to convince me that a physical control isn’t better.
I saw this Model S the other day - does anyone know what wheels these are and what model year(s) they were offered? I'm ratcheting up my activity level of tire kicking and seriously considering a lightly used S. I see them everywhere but really liked the way this one looked. The tail light design looks like this might be a few years old but I'm not an expert on being able to tell the years of Model S apart. Appreciate any insight from the crew here.
“gear selectors” and “shifters” - my goodness we only have FORWARD/DRIVE, BACKWARD/REVERSE, and PARK. and on a typical trip, how often do we change? starting the trip, maybe reverse then drive? ending the trip, maybe reverse and park again. both actions done at very low speed or stopped. forever some people with ‘traditional’ shifters have made errors and driven through garages, into stores, etc. same with pedals. a friend started her car and being confused, she floored the gas instead of brake and went flying out of her driveway, across the road, and into a tree. bad car design? no, brain fart from driver.
i think this longing for big center console or steering column poles often slathered in wrinkled leather comes from days with P, R, N D L and sometimes others (2, 3, 4, etc).
on a tesla you can tell it to predict which of the whopping 2 directions you might want to go in so you don’t have to touch the screen AT ALL. it works very well. in a garage parked front in for example, clearly you only want to go in reverse 99% of the time, so the car does that. works great.
the more i drive the tesla, the more i realize how antiquated everything else is.
change is hard… but not wanting change is no reason there should never be any change.

I will say though, even though the lack of a keyboard won out...the physical keyboard is still better.
so if a phone was available with a physical keyboard (and obviously a much smaller screen unless t’s a foldable), you’d get it?

noted for the future, LOL.

because he was famous it became a thing briefly. but as you point out, it was HIS ERROR, not the car. i had the same car and shifter, and it was never an issue.

Ugh winter driving efficiency hitting hard. I've got a long roundtrip commute that I do once a week. The way there is a slight elevation gain for most of the drive there and I was at like 2.1 mi/kWh during the summer and on the way back I'll get 2.4 mi/KwH. Now it's closer to 1.8~1.9 there and maybe 2.1 on the way back. Still have plenty of range if I charge to my normal 80% but it's getting a little closer than I'd like.
Went to the airport to pick up my wife yesterday morning and at 73mph and 24F out, I was hovering around 1.8 mi/kWh which made sad because I knew my lifetime efficiency was going to start dropping.
