I realize now just how much "interference" I was getting, before this mod.
so removing that plastic reinforcement actually improved the sound? when you say cleaner, can you elaborate? i've never had any rattle (not sure about distortion, maybe i'm not playing it loud enough ).

also, what kind of 'snippers' did you use?

edit: looks like stanley fatmax?

The sound is 'cleaner' in the fact that I don't have any more rattling sound at high volumes, when the bass hits. If you don't have any rattling noise then you're already good. Those slippers will do just fine. 👍🏾

like these?

anyhoo... i know you know this, but for others...

after pulling the coupe cover loose, you can remove it by taking out the bolt (10mm wrench i think) that holds the strap in place:

next you can remove the 12 screws holding the cloth covered part in place. you don't have to do this, but it's easier to work with the sub cloth covered plastic piece separately, imo.

here's the piece pulled away separately.

i used some cheap wire clippers to CAREFULLY snip the plastic bars and needle nose pliers to pull 'em out, using timado404's pics for guidance

here's the start of it.

eventually i got there... took about an hour trying not to rush, desparately trying to not poke the cutters and pliers through the thin cloth which is 'stuck' to the plastic bars. once i'd cut 3 sides, i was able to get fingers under the bar grid to gently pull it away from the cloth.

putting it back together was cake.

haven't listened to it yet.

Yeah, I "fat fingered" the "slippers" on my cell phone, 🤣.

I had some spare felt in my house, so I cut out 2 circular layers in an attempt to stop the rattling. It helped but if I really crank it up on certain punchy songs with bass, I still get a slight rattle. I find it odd that the 2 layers of felt didn't eliminate the issue.

^^^ can only imagine that felt will muffle the bass sound.

however, i just took a road trip (to sebring!) and can confirm the bass definitely sounds BETTER ('cleaner' as timado404 wrote) with all that plastic cut out!

Just trying to come up with a solution other than cutting out the plastic. If the sub speaker was hitting the plastic, won't it still be hitting the jagged edges of the remaining pieces of the plastic grille which might cause some damage? It seems like no matter how careful you are when cutting, there will still be sharp edges left on the grille. Do you think they can be rounded off with a dremel tool without touching the fabric covering?

You’re overthinking this as many of us have already posted our results from cutting the plastic grille off.

If the sub speaker driver is coming in contact with your plastic speaker cover, you have a much larger issues to solve.
My guess would be your driver, even under max volume, does not come near the speaker cover.

So what's causing the rattling if the speaker isn't hitting and vibrating against the speaker grille? What else would cause the rattling? The entire piece is a molded piece of plastic so it's not like there are loose pieces that can cause rattling.

Bass and the vibrating pieces it can cause are wretched creatures when you're trying to chase them down. Anything that makes any sort of attachment or can be separated can cause an issue at a loud enough volume, especially with a bass laden track. I still occasionally get a slight rattling from time to time, although not from the speaker grille. The piece that lays across the top of the rear glass, (3rd brake light), I've rattled on more than a few occasions.

back to the ML audio itself... i've noticed there's a GIANT gap in my perceived 'quality' from the system depending on how old the music is, even it's a high quality recording/stream. i think modern music is mixed for much bigger dynamic range than in the past. so to me, old music sounds pretty poor on ML no matter what.
