I was driving my V8 today. Such a dream! And the 5 speed auto transmission is outstanding. No start stop. Full-time Four Wheel Drive 4wd. Just majestic
you really need to drive a vehicle with the drivetrain that cannot be mentioned here. it's smoother, faster, quieter, more reliable, and in one brand, more capable off road. now that's majestic.

for basically that car's entire existence i had written it off as 'just a ford' and never really paid much attention to it... but like 5 years ago the toyota dealership i worked at had a used one for sale and i sold it to some chill 70 something guy, and i got to be the one to drive it to his house for the delivery
it was a nice thing to drive! at one point toward the end of the trip i got to give it some beans (in a respectful manner of course lol) and the engine really impressed me! seemed almost too good to be an early 2000s ford engine, at which point i did a quick google search and learned it's actually a jaguar V8 lol... since then i've been a fan of that car, and i agree it's definitely underappreciated
nice post and interesting about it having a jag engine!
‘I wasn’t comparing it to an EV. I was just saying that it is really nice to drive something simple every once in a while. I don’t even have variable valve timing on my 2UZ. No screens

Sure but there are better cars for that experience than a 4Runner, your car is a midrange example of the type and while decent it's not exactly special. I didn't notice all that much difference between the 4.7 and 4.0 versions of it since both are very slow and have the same suspension feel.
A G-wagon is a much better example of that type of car as is the LC/LX

V8 4Runner is a pretty cool vehicle. Even the V6 4Runner. Not everybody can afford a G Wagen lol, myself included. There’s always “something better” nothing wrong with being excited about what you’ve got.

You can totally get a G-wagon for the price of a 4Runner, they are bad but not new 4Runner bad and you get a much higher prestige and function car in the end.

Perhaps an ancient totally ragged out G Wagen.
Not everybody cares about “prestige”, and not everybody wants to drive decades old cars.
EDIT, looked it up…in order to get a G Wagen for 4 Runner money it’s got to be 20 years old and/or have well over 150k miles. Yeah, no interest in a 20 year old car. That vehicle has needs that most people can’t handle. It’s a much better move to just spend $45,000 on a new 4Runner and you get a very cool BOF vehicle with a ton of capability and no unique needs.

And at the end of the day it's still just a 4Runner, if I'm gonna spend that much I want something worth that much. Otherwise I'll just lease and pay a small fraction of real cost in exchange for not really owning the car, leasing is very good for being able to have access to far more options than normal.

A new G Wagen is a $3,500 monthly lease payment lol. We’re talking about completely different strata of cars here and nobody is comparing the two. The average income of a G Wagen driver is likely over $500,000 a year.
To you it’s “just a 4 Runner”, but lots of people just want a 4 Runner. Nothing wrong with a 4 Runner. I know people who have and love 4 Runners, and people who aspire to own a 4 Runner and can’t yet afford one. Your argument that you can buy something old that’s better for what a new 4 Runner costs doesn’t hold water when you consider you can also buy an old 4 Runner for dramatically less than the old car you’re buying compared to the new 4 Runner. Don’t be so elitist.
A 4 Runner is a vehicle with a rich heritage and a ton of capability that will serve somebody for 300,000 miles. Nothing to sneeze at there.
Saw a Buick Riviera today. Was at the end of its life. Anyways, in hindsight, meh it’s not that special. But, I thought the front window wiper bump stops was pretty interesting.
Also saw a Lexus LS400. Blue…. I’ve never loved them but I know lots do.
Do you get most of these in Toronto? You see a lot of cool cars, and/or just interesting finds. I haven't seen a '93 LS400 in a blue moon. And frankly you find cars that appear to still be running that have evidently lasted so many of those hard winters!
