General Car Conversation
So since this is general car chat I want to give an update on my first road trip with my Tesla where I need to use a supercharger. I am in Richmond, VA which is about 130 miles away for my daughters dance competition. My wife and I had to drive separately because I can’t stay the whole weekend and I had to come up late last night.
First, I charged to 100% which on my car is now about 370 miles. I arrived with about 180 miles and did not stop averaging probably 65-70mph. So I lost about 60 miles of range which shows you how ridiculous the “range” estimate really is. I’ve calculated before and for every 100 miles I drive I lose about 40 miles of “range.” So based on the estimate i should be able to make it home okay but I won’t or it will be cutting it too close.
This is where an EV kind of sucks. A Tesla supercharger is about 15 minutes away and when I get there I will only need to charge 15-20 minutes or so is what I estimate since I have 155 miles of range left right now. I have to go and spend an hour of my time leaving the competition to charge and come back or when I leave late tonight I will have to stop for 15-20 minutes on my way home which I don’t feel like doing at 10 at night, I just want to get home. I wish the network out here was better or my hotel had a charger.
I know a lot of EV owners say it’s no big deal but I still haven’t gotten used to it. I think it’s a major hurdle to get over for a person like me but not so much if you have a different mindset. I guess I feel like my time is too valuable because I don’t have much of it these days.

No excuse. The Mercedes dealer should have informed SW that they were short staffed.
BUT ... each customer deserves the dealer to communicate with them. I've definitely had a number of times where I had to keep a loaner an extra day or 2, and I'm usually fine with that. But DON'T make me call at 5:15 to find out what's going on. Call me and tell me it's taking longer than anticipated...or a part is backordered...etc.

What's a coupe? Lol. I know. They have GLE Coupe, Cayenne Coupe... so Coupes don't have to have two doors. But the other way around is true, right? If something has two doors, it's a coupe. No?
The dealer is using their skilled guy(s) to make money and don't really give them time to look at stuff. The vast majority of their guys are only good for working on the mainstream cars not the high ends
not sure if it makes any sense to do it, but it was interesting.

so my suv lease is up feb '24 so a year away. for grins i went onto cars.com, got an appraisal and i'd be about $4K ahead selling it now and paying off all the remaining lease payments! i can do that right? that's what you mean by 'trade out'?

i think a LOT of mercedes owners have a bunch of cars and don't care if their 'precious' is at the dealer for a while, plus they don't want a loaner no matter how nice.
the SL back seat is a joke, unlike the now discontinued S coupe.

I am amazed how much city driving wears down your tires.
My continental DWS tires are rated for 50k miles, and I only got 20k miles out of them on my GS.
They are pretty much down to the wear bars on all 4 tires, regularly rotated, driven unaggressively.
I do mostly city driving.
I imagine uber drivers must chew through tires fast.
My next set of tires will be cheap tires.
I think there is no need for performance tires for city driving.
Just flushing money down the toilet.
