The negativity in the car community was the same though with Lexus. It was still that way when we got our first Lexus in 1998.
I can see it in some ways. One thing early Lexus (up until the mid 2000s) and Genesis have in common is that they're often accused by European badge "aficionados" of being derivative knockoffs with their designs and technology, with frequently echoed xenophobic claims of "Asians only copy and steal". I still remember Clarkson's mini documentary on Top Gear about Japanese cars in the late 90s where he basically roasted all of them of being ripoffs of European cars, including the LS. That kind of thinking is something that no superiority in performance, technology, or reliability can overcome- and I believe a big reason why neither Lexus nor any other Japanese luxury brand ever took off in Europe like they did in the US.
Unlike Lexus though, a good portion of Genesis's head staff are industry vets who were formerly in charge at these "prestige" European companies. That makes the ripoff accusations even more painfully out of touch with reality.
Electric G80 will apparently start at $80K in South Korea. Will probably be cheaper in the US by a bit like the rest of Genesis stuff brought over here. Looks like Hyundai wants to be the first to bring out a competitor to the Model S that's actually in its price range.
Since this isn't on a skateboard chassis, I assume the powertrain setup will be something like the Kona or Soul EV, but with a larger battery. Doubt it'll be able to beat the Tesla on pure acceleration nor mileage due to the compromised setup, but it will be cross-shopped. More importantly not a single German or Japanese competitor has anything to go up against it yet.

Back in 2015, I almost purchased the Hyundai Genesis myself, and indeed it sold really well relative to E Class, 5 Series, GS and ES FWD.
On its global debut in 2017, I predicted 5LS would not do well relative to its peers, and that's exactly what happened.
I knew both G90 and G70 wouldn't do well relative to their peers either, and that is exactly what happened.
The all new G90 only able to outsell the 11 year old 4.5LS by a poor 304 units in its first full year back in 2017.
Although unpopular in itself, the 5LS immediately nailed the Genesis G90.
Although unpopular in itself, on its first full year of sales, the 5LS sold more than twice the G90.
Last year, the all new G70 in its first full year unable to outsell an ageing 6 year old IS by a wide margin: 11,901 G70's to 14,920 IS's.
Now, I'm willing to bet that midsize G80 Mk II will NOT do well relative to its peers.
No. The public will not accept Genesis G80 Mk II.
That's my bet.
My bet is that consumers will continue to purchase: E Class, 5 Series, A6 & ES.
Just a guess. We'll see if I am right or wrong.
I always quote sales "relative to their peers" so that people cannot make weak excuses like high riding SUV's nor economic factors like GFC nor COVID-19....

The first G80 that was bought burnt to the ground literally. But in all seriousness, the G80 has no chance at success stateside. Very low sales from an almost non existent dealer network. The GV80 on the other hand should be popular when it comes out.

Come on, such cheap shots, you know that car drove over a HUGE metal object which obviously created a ton of heat and sparks and boom.

But back to the G80....The new G80 has its two engines going for it and fresh design.... I assume it will be as good as the GV I recently saw in Toronto...so that is another plus. The bad is that Cadillac has a better priced CT5 and BMW and Mercedes still have better brand cache...Lexus GS as well

A bit Satin in my opinion. But it does look great! Video shows how nice the interior looks. I really like it. Very curious to see what a Sport model would look like, as this while very nice, looks a little soft for me.

The problem is that the G80 is not getting the sales that, IMO, it deserves. Yes, I know that "almost" only counts in horseshoes, but, nonetheless, if the Lacrosse had not been available three years ago, I probably would have bought a new AWD G80 myself. It was that close.
