General Car Conversation - 2026 Part 1
Partly depends on what the claims are actually for. What claims I have submitted over the years with GEICO were (mostly) things beyond my control (under Comprehensive)....stuff like paint-damage from vandals, stolen chrome emblems, cracked windshields from Beltway road-debris, etc..... By law, at least in some states, insurance companies cannot raise rates for Comprehensive claims.
This is why I strongly recommend that people have at least some Comprehensive coverage on their vehicles...the chances of things like that happening to one's vehicle is significant, particularly in and around large cities. Some people, to keep costs down, either skip Comprehensive coverage altogether, or have just the bare minimum in each category that the State requires to register their vehicle.

Even comprehensive claims, they will drop you if you file a bunch in a short period. Even though they can’t raise your rates it does go on your CLUE report and if you go to get insured by someone else they will come up and impact your new rates with the new carrier.
Insurance companies want NO claims!
Comprehensive coverage is cheap. I have $50 comp deductibles because raising them to $1000 saves me like $30.

It still doesn't pass the test and we can argue until blue in the faces.
I have injured nobody nor damaged anything other than my cars. Two fender bender claims in two years, that's not THAT insane. Two in 2 months, well yeah. Something is wrong on their end because my new Progressive insurance is literally 1/3 the cost!!!! Not exaggerating!!!! And you were dead wrong about them "increasing my bill 40% when renewing".
Once when I was a baby there was a fire at my house and my Mom's Peugeot rolled down the hill shortly after and got damaged.... She didn't get dropped.. Granted that was 40 years ago but still.
**** insurance companies anyway, and banks... they're the worst.

Right I mean I didn't have two accidents costing them $40,000 a piece..... These were stupid-***, petty, parking lot fender benders where I didn't **** anything up except my own vehicle.
In any case they can go straight to hell bc I pay 1/3 now lol.

apart from comprehensive or glass claims that happen when the car is parked, ANY moving claim even if you're 100% NOT at fault can seriously impact premiums, especially if that puts you just over the edge into the next risk group
i know with GEICO the goal is to be in the "GG" group which is GEICO general, if you have one too many claims or tickets your policy can automatically switch into the "GI" group which is GEICO indemnity and those rates are significantly higher... even within those GG and GI groups there's like a dozen subgroups each corresponding to a different level of risk
You still made claims. I never had even one in the entire time I have been driving and that is what they "want" and expect, anything more than zero is risky and because we are forced to have insurance they get to just ditch anyone they don't want to deal with knowing they will have replacement money bags walk in by law.
I'm paying 2/3 less with Progressive so I'm glad it all happened regardless.

It’s no different than Progressive hiking my rates with no claims. They were also telling me “we don’t want to cover you anymore” by doing that. Like I said before wait and see. You said I was dead wrong and that your other company would never drop you either, I am very confident that eventually Progressive will hike your rates, certainly if you file any more at fault claims. Just Google reviews of Progressive, they are famous for that.
The average in America is one collision claim every 18 years. Having more than 1 within a couple months is a very unusual risk, insurance companies don’t want that.
I have been driving for nearly 30 years and I have *never* filed a collision claim. Never. (Knock on wood). I have filed a couple comprehensive claims over that 30 years, maybe 2 windshields and a hail damage claim. I have had minor accidents where I damaged my own cars but I paid to repair them out of pocket to avoid a claim. So yeah plenty of customers out there with no claim history.

Right but you were incorrect about Progressive raising my rates. It just renewed for $10 more lol.
I'm glad all this happened lol.
Here's also what doesn't make sense, I had a $9500 boat collision claim years ago and the insurance renewed and didn't even go up... same company.

It’s one renewal. Wait and see. Like I said they are famous for this, they’re not likely to just leave you alone lol
It’s all about risk calculation. For whatever reason they didn’t attribute the same level of risk to the boat claim. It was also only 1 claim, the issue was the multiple claims in such a short timeframe. The amount they pay out isn’t really the issue. It may not make sense to us on the surface but to their risk calculations it does.

OK, you clarified it a little. I can agree with that. Yes, there ARE some people with no claims. When you said, though, earlier, that insurance companies want NO claims, my first impression was that you meant no claims from anyone, which is simply unfeasible. In general, stuff is gonna happen, like it or not.

Well that's not been my experience, it is mostly there because the .gov mandates it to be so. SO many would not have it at all if it was optional and I think we are up to 1/4 of cars on the road just straight up don't have it anyway, hence higher prices for those of us who do carry uninsured motorist policies.
wow, long discussion on insurance.
ajt, you should love how insurance works because it’s like your favorite movie, casino. the house wins.
the way you stated that implies ALL people file insurance claims ALL the time, and that’s absolutely not true. most people NEVER file claims, if ever.
insurance should be for big problems, not inconveniences or minor damage.
exactly.
meanwhile, about the new es…
why is lower range “less of an issue” for the ES?
