Filled up the GS today. $6.03 per gallon for premium, which is reasonably good around here. Still though, I’m sure it’s the first time it cost me $88 to fill that car. I used to fill the truck for that. I’ll fill the Tundra tomorrow and I’m sure it’ll be well over $150 to fill it.
California's property tax rate is certainly not considered high, but the one tax that most are not willing to swallow is the 10ish% state income tax. California certainly still has nice places with great weather and/or less expensive places but it's hard for people to move in and can maintain same level of comfort/living. IMO, housing cost, crimes/crime laws and homelessness are as important if not more to worry about when considering moving to California.

i believe most think of Cali and NYC like this for better or worse.
When I lived in CA what I hated was how the sales tax was basically as high as it is here in TN, on top of their other bullshit.
That's the only annoying tax here in TN (no state income tax), sales tax is nearly 10% and you don't get any exclusions like for food up in New York State.
I mean it's fine but if you buy a $2500 TV for example it does get annoying.

I love how the Faux news propaganda gets drunk like kool aid LOL. Yes if you live in SF, Oakland or LA you run into homelessness, but I also saw it in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, so it's not exclusive to California
The California hate is so trendy and funny. It’s a wonderful state. Let’s see your state have 40 million people lol. Do they have opportunities and issues? Absolutely. Guess what so does every state.
I will say tho the first time I got taxed for using a plastic bag at 7-11 I was like wtf hahaha
Gas is expensive there but they also pushed EVs first and hybrids etc

I mean, he wouldn't be where he is if he weren't so damn smart. I definitely am not stupid but he runs circles around me and I've had a degree for 20 years. His brains and hard work and motivation are the reason he's so successful, not luck. Luck is winning the lottery or being born into money. I don't think choosing the right company had much to do with it--- most of my smart, hardworking friends have really really good high paying jobs too. One best friend of mine just made partner at his law firm, etc. Another, she is on track to be a VP at her company as well. It all makes sense, after about 20 years of hard work the big bucks and perks start coming in. What's so shitty is that because of my back issues I would have lost any decent job I had, even at a big company... I would have had to take long term disability for YEARS and I'm sure I'd have been let go. I guess it worked out though.
oh ability and intelligence and work ethic are also a huge part of it I’m just saying there is usually a degree of good fortune involved too. Being in the right place at the right time so that your talent and ability can be applied is what I’m talking about.
i don't feel bad for you, nor do i worry about it, lol.
The WalletHub link is worthless as it uses an undefined metric of "personal income" to drive its analysis. It's impossible to take anything from that analysis and no tax professional would. As an aside and at the risk of pointing out the obvious, the states where tax burdens are lower tend the ones where the average incomes are low, just a fraction of the average incomes here. In Santa Clara county, which we just left, a single persons salary of $111,000 is considered to be low income and the individual likely qualifies for housing assistance. For a family of 4, just under $160,000 qualifies as low income for these purposes.
The tax foundation link on the other hand is a hodgepodge amalgamation of personal and corporate taxes and doesn't really tell you much at the individual level as it's driving to a metric of tax competitiveness which is also kind of meaningless.

NY no longer allows plastic bags but still charges 5-10cents for paper bags. Definitely annoying.

Problem is....electricity is expensive there, too. There is probably nothing cheap in the state. That's one reason why so many people are homeless there.
