This thread has been good I have to say. Bit and Mike have done a good job keeping it open. There hasn't been much if any personal insults. Let's keep it this way as long as possible.
a lot of people are unaware that there is a 10% tariff on oil coming from Canada. This tariff started in 2025 but apparently has been relaxed as of late…prior to 2025 there was no tariff at all as free trade agreements were honoured. USA depends heavily on Canadian crude oil for energy.
As for EVs, the high gas prices make a strong argument that EVs are the future for many

While I’m not taking ANYTHING away from GS3 and his hard work (yours too) etc, that’s really not true.
My spouse grew up poor, started at the company he works for at 19 years old at $9 an hour just as a basic employee.
21 years later he is an executive, only 24 positions like his exist in the whole company. He will be a VP (not THE vp but one of them) within a couple years.
And oh, we save. We live like a couple that lives on $50,000 a year combined. Our income is wayyyyyyyy more many times over.
But, you have to look at the good fortune that existed there too. He chose the right company, my guess is that company was in a growth phase, and he was in a position where he didn't need a college education to get in the door, or he took advantage of opportunities presented by that company to get that education.
Had he chosen to work somewhere else at 19 his life might be very different.
This is the truth. When we look back at our own successes most people over-emphasize their work and skill and under-emphasize the luck and good timing that played a role.
There is not 1 person who achieved any amount of success that also didn’t have a whole bunch of bad luck.
Its like anything in life - nothing is perfect, there is no magical pill etc.
If your broke, you need to struggle and bust your ***.
Again there is no country like the US where you can change your financial standing in a short amount of time.
One difference about living in America and especially in NY compared to a communist country like in the USSR - you HAVE to work VERY HARD and KEEP Working to have a certain lifestyle. In USSR, while you may not have had everything- lifestyle was way more relaxed and then people were able to retire early. Unfortunately we all know how it ended.
Again I rather have the fate of my life in my control than relying on govt to provide guidance.

People always have adversity, but I stand by what I said. Circumstances and timing have a huge impact on success. There is this idea that people who are very wealthy are smarter than others, and having interacted with many very wealthy and successful people in my life I can tell you that is often not the case.

Haha listen, I was a lazy *** second gen American born to an American mom and immigrant dad, all school ever taught me was it was a place to party and get *****...or at least try to . Most of my friends from back then are dead from overdoses or worse. Thankfully I woke up as an adult, got my life together and built my everything up, with a lot of pushing from my brother in law. If it wasn't for him, I would probably be another loser living off of others. But also kudos to you and your spouse who also has that rare drive 👍
this is true! and looking at the sen candidate in maine (platner), the new seattle mayor, the nyc mayor, it seems young people want communism thinking it will be more ‘fair’.
All these "communism, capitalism, republicans, democrats" are just cliche labels designed to keep the tax cattle arguing with each other. For what its worth, on daily basis life in USSR, was just as transactional as it is in the USA, so it was communist just in the name of the government system.
I simply stated my observation of the societal and economical reality in todays USA. So much misery, substance abuse, mental issues, homeless encampments everywhere, government corruption, and degeneracy that never existed in USSR. I'm doing pretty well for myself financially, something that wouldn't be possible in USSR, so I wouldn't want to go back, but I still think this world is messed up and advise young people not to bring children into it.
I couldn't agree more. I'm so "down" on everything. I've been on autopilot since March 2020.
As lame as it may sound posting on CL and interacting with all you great people is one of the few bright spots left in my life.
The one thing I discovered past 2020 is the motorcycle community, it's been a blessing. Met so many likeminded individuals, made many friends and epic adventures - almost 60k miles on two wheels. At the same time I also cut off ties with quite a few "friends" who proved themselves to be full on vax braindeads, lol.
Local Costco gas is holding steady at Regular $5.359 Premium $5.759
Ours continues its trend. Another dime today. 52 cents in 5 days, currently $5.70 for premium. Odd though that your gap between grades is so much smaller than ours--40 cents vs. 90.

You can’t be serious - please speak to ppl that suffered under Communism and has nothing to do with ability to earn a living lol
The amount of criminals and alcoholism in Russia was insane. They were sent to gulags and murdered by Stalin.
Most of America doesn’t have homeless ppl or drug addicts on the sidewalk. That’s just big cities that don’t enforce the laws.

Yeah, it's been between 40¢ and 50¢ difference but used to be more of a gap like yours -- look at Mar 27th where it's around 70¢ difference
They figured they'd get as much as they can from the Reg gas users as they're more of them nowadays.

Here in IL it used to be exactly a dime difference between grades. That changed around the high gas price days in 2007/08, never to return again.
