As a result I was able to make some connections and over time save up $$$ while going to college. Then the real grind began lol

I’m nothing special and many ppl in NY are just like this. Came from nothing but it’s just different mentality.
I can’t understand being in USA for multiple generations and not having Millions if you just use 80% effort.
I also come from a father who was an immigrant with $200 in his pocket, my great grandmother from Ukraine, I know what you are talking about. But you are an ambitious person who picked themselves up by their bootstraps, which you should absolutely be proud of. Unfortunately the system here (especially the education system) doesn't favor the middle class and has gone downhill, which is why high tech companies hire mostly H1B visa holders, because there are few Americans that can fill those positions. If America actually invested in people, they wouldn't need to import talent like they do today, which is by design.

There is not enough space for me to write on this subject, so I'll just say kudos to you for making something out of yourself. You are one of only a small number of people who made themselves from nothing. Most people just don't have your drive ambition, and most don't know how to save money in the first place, which is something immigrants are better at

This pricing has become normal in California. Even the local Costco is hitting the $6 range

There is also luck involved, the right timing and individual risk too.

This is the truth. When we look back at our own successes most people over-emphasize their work and skill and under-emphasize the luck and good timing that played a role.

I had considered getting a compact car costing $30,000 to obtain 34mpg but that would require 2,267 weeks (43 years) to break even just on the difference in gas consumption. Unfortunately, 40 years is well beyond my anticipated personal expiration date.
Fortunately, my wife reminded me that eggs which were approaching $8 a dozen are down to $1.69 at our local grocery store. I feel better now.
That extra $55 is $55 less for families struggling to feed their kids.

Fortunately, eggs are optional, gas isn't. That extra $6 you're saving on eggs is probably now paying a fraction of the increase on your utility bills.

Filled up the truck today after work. That's 2/3 of a tank. Thank God I can put regular in this.

Sam's $3.49. Up 7 pennies from yesterday = 79 more pennies a week to fuel 17mpg my truck. That compact 34mpg car is looking more appealing every day. Meanwhile, I'll have to adjust the thermostat. Thanks for the reminder.

apparently Och does.

Covid was devastating for many especially if you had a business that was impacted but that was extraordinary event.
the devastation was caused more (regionally) by government overreach and incompetence than the virus. florida BOOMED because of covid. only a couple of weeks of ‘sort of’ shut down, then let people decide how to live their lives. just like sweden. florida is BOOMING right now too.

this is true! and looking at the sen candidate in maine (platner), the new seattle mayor, the nyc mayor, it seems young people want communism thinking it will be more ‘fair’.

I think young people don't have the ignorant boomer views of the world, and see it for what really is, and wisely choosing not to bring children into it.
well, it has seemed to me that people may do things out of ignorance or naïve optimism, but that can be a good thing. but yes, when i was young i knew i didn’t want kids.

absolutely true. while i only got $100 after graduating high school from my father, i was driven, and had aptitude in computers at the start of the tech revolution. i knew i’d never be out of work unless i wanted to be.

I'd like to offer special thanks to the moderator for keeping the thread focused on gas price, and especially not allowing EV and political discussion to creep in.

This thread has been good I have to say. Bit and Mike have done a good job keeping it open. There hasn't been much if any personal insults. Let's keep it this way as long as possible.

I couldn't agree more. I'm so "down" on everything. I've been on autopilot since March 2020.

As lame as it may sound posting on CL and interacting with all you great people is one of the few bright spots left in my life.

Capitalism has failed many. Elon Musk has said universal income is needed. So naturally you have those looking to different forms of life.

Now for some humor

While I’m not taking ANYTHING away from GS3 and his hard work (yours too) etc, that’s really not true.

My spouse grew up poor, started at the company he works for at 19 years old at $9 an hour just as a basic employee.

And oh, we save. We live like a couple that lives on $50,000 a year combined. Our income is wayyyyyyyy more many times over.
