Mine can be contrary as well. I've found I can get it open if I use my fingernail to kind of push down on the top of the button. It's hard to describe...if I just push the button straight in like you think you should, it will not open.
Mine sometimes wont open buy me pushing on it. I've found i was pushing to hard and as soon as i hit the button with the least amount of pressure it opens every time. Go figure!
Finicky cars i tell ya.

The front cover is easy to remove. It is held in place by a couple of tabs on the bottom of the cover. Easy to take off. When you get it off, you will see that the button and latch mechanism is attached. Just a lever pinned in place and a spring for latching.
Look to see why the latching lever is not springing into it's place, which is a channel. If it's off to the side it won't latch. The whole lever mechanism is fairly sloppy. If the tab on the left side is broken, the latch will no align with the slot it must go thru.
If it won't open I would think you could probably silde a 3x5 card in at the top and disengage the latch.
Suggest you take the cover off and look it over and see if you can fix it. It might be as simple as pushing in on one side of the button if part of back side is missing.
