The point is that most of today's smaller sedans won't let you make a major purchase at Home Depot or at a place selling furniture and/or bulky items.
That's one of the most remarkable things that the Buick Encore GX, a subcompact-sized crossover, can do. The right front seat folds down flat enough with the seats in back so that you can carry long narrow items up to 8 feet long....in a vehicle that is itself only 14 feet long.
Sorry but I carried a 230cm tall / 75cm(x2) wide / whatever deep (the "deeper" option) Ikea PAX frame with an e120 (9th gen) Corolla hatch. Wagons way bigger than that (i.e. Passat) are quite regular over here. So... no, sorry, no.
The ONLY arguments that I've heard pro-SUVs are the seating position and ease of entry/exit for some people - that's it. Ride's worse, handling's worse, performance is worse, fuel economy is ridiculous on the highway, "backroad" capabilities are available for just about every wagon out there - and they tend to look great to boot (superb scout / xc70 / passat alltrack / BL/BP outback / e-class all-terrain and so on and so forth).
Things with actual offroad capabilities (you know, cherokees) are obviously out of the SUV hate list.
GM product of that vintage, could just be the only way to keep the thing shut.
Entirely possible!

But we don't have the availability of wagons here that you do. I love the idea of a wagon, the issue is there just isn't enough volume for us. When we travel we bring a LOT of stuff, and we use the height of the cargo area as well as the square footage of the floor. I showed my wife an E Class wagon the other day when we looked at the GLS and she just immediately said no way, its too small.
The other thing is, modern crossovers are just slightly taller wagons. They aren't trucklike, they are just cars with more space, more rugged looks, AWD and higher ground clearance.
That is hilarious you mentioned that because I had to take a few friends to Johnson City and it's right at the Pigeon Forge exit in plain view and we passed it. This was recent, last week.
I had already heard about it just in passing on the news----120 gas pumps!!!! It's HUGGGGGGE. I'll pass getting gas there, though.
