Western Washington decided to have some snow Thursday night. Was driving just fine then, bam, all of a sudden you see nothing but snow covering the highway. Doing about 55, maybe 58, I realized I needed to slow down so I tried to, gradually. I brought it down to 45 when I started to lose control. I crashed into a guard rail at just over 40. Curiously, the air bag did not go off. I thought for sure I was going to be at least seriously injured, but nope. No broken bones, no cuts, nothing at all.
Car is in horrendous shape. Will have a picture for ya'll in the morning. It's funny. I was going to snap a pic of my "new to me" car but I never got around to it because of the awful weather. Was going to get it nice and cleaned up, waxed and all, then show it off on here. Unfortunately the only pic of my Avalon will be with the entire front smashed up.
so sorry to hear this but the best part is you weren't hurt. and the good news is you get to go car shopping again.
Thanks everyone. Yeah really surprised I didn't feel even the slightest bit of pain. Right before I knew I was going to run into the guard rail, I loosened up as best I could. Heard if you tense up, bad things could happen.
It's ironic I ditch the 430 primarily so I could get a vehicle better suited for winter driving. Wonder how the 430 would have done in place of the Avalon.
I think I'm done with FWD sedans. It's almost April and if we're going to continue getting garbage weather (even in the blink of an eye like last night) and getting worse, I'm going to find an AWD model. There are some that interest me, even ones that aren't 20 years old.
In that kind of situation, the type of drivetrain doesn't make much difference. You lost control while moving forward, and my guess is thats a function of rapidly deteriorating roads that weren't pre-treated, worn tires, RWD AWD or FWD likely wouldn't have made a difference. Only thing you can do is slow way, way down.
One thing about FWD cars, is having the drive wheels and the steering wheels being the same isn't ideal when you are in a slide, because you can't apply throttle AND have directional control...
Yeah crashes like this usually have almost nothing to do with the car, and almost everything to do with the tires. Glad you're ok though, that's the only thing that actually matters. Sucks about the car, but it's just a thing.
Sorry to hear about your accident xjokerz. I got into an accident last weekend so I feel your pain. The convertible I purchased (thanks again SW17LS for checking out that Benz for me!) last year met an untimely demise when an uninsured driver decided he wanted to join me on the highway exit at the last minute and rammed me off the road into a highway barrier. Did I mention we were on a bridge at the time?
Accidents can be traumatizing. Make sure you check in with yourself mentally and physically.
holy crap tango, that sounds like a very dangerous situation. i assume you weren't hurt but sorry to hear about the car. what kind of car was it?
It was honestly terrifying and I haven't driven on the highway since. I forgot to add this occurred at 6am when it was still dark out. I need to get over it and am committed to returning back to normal this weekend but that accident really rattled me. I have the usual back/neck ache but the Benz E450 convertible I was driving was a tank. I actually had the top down because with the Airscarf, wind deflector, heated seat, regular heat, and windows up you can drive in mid 40 degree weather in complete comfort. Definitely added some drama to the whole thing. The rollover bars popped up which was interesting.
Sorry to hear about you guys accidents. It sometimes takes awhile to feel comfortable driving again too. But at least you’re physically fine. I’m about to head out for a road trip. Hopefully no surprise. On a different note, this is why I like ICE car. I can keep driving and get to my destination not so late in the evening. Stop for food or restroom break whenever needed!

Oh my god! So sorry to hear that! I dont blame you for being rattled....well the car did what it was supposed to do and kept you safe...

Yeah, the front tires weren't in the best shape. They measured 6/32 of an inch when I ran by the tire shop two weeks ago. I was trying to get another 5 or 6 months out of them, seeing as how the bad weather was (supposedly) behind us and it should start being half way decent.
I'd be fine with another FWD vehicle but those AWD cars, specifically ones like the RL/RLX or a TL/TLX even though it's not as advanced, is intriguing.

I see what you did there! Hey, an Avalon is a very comfortable, nice big car. I enjoyed racking up the miles. Three days ago I calculated that I was on pace for 31,682 miles in the year spanning Jan 8, 2023 to Jan 8, 2024. Lol

Wow! I am sorry to hear that. I can't believe that people drive like that. Plus no insurance. Your wreck is, I'm sure, a lot more traumatizing than mine. I simply just lost control. Big deal. Yours though, I'm sure will stick with you for quite some time. That is rough.

Yeah, my mom was in a big wreck with her Ford Windstar back in 1997. I was in the 3rd row and we got rear-ended by a motor home. We were almost at a dead stop and that van was doing 35-40 when it ran into us. Aside from a bunch of glass in my hair, I was fine but I remember my mother didn't want to drive for a while. Some folks react differently to accidents. It can be dangerous out there, that's for sure.

Yeah, gotta keep moving forward I guess. I'm glad to hear you're feeling OK afterwards. I hope insurance treats you alright.
