3 cylinder engines are so god-awful that it seems like you can feel the crank turning over and/or the pistons, literally.
Not if the balance-shafts and the flywheel in the engine are done correctly. On GM's three-cylinder turbos, there is virtually no vibration except for a slight bit, right around the torque-peak at 1500-1700 RPM, and a slight kick just as the engine starts up. In most driving conditions, I can't tell it from a typical inline-four. They do make somewhat of a tractor noise on low-speed acceleration...but even that is muted, particularly in the Buicks.
load up that puppy with five full size fat adults and see what happens?
Subcompact crossovers are not intended for five large adults. Sure, the marketers (and the specs) will tell you they are, but you have to remember two things. First, marketers are known for B.S. (some of them will try and convince you the Earth is flat), and, Second, any vehicle has a FIRM gross-weight limit, no matter how many "adults" the specs say you can fit in.

I have four cars with buttery smooth V8s, a 3 cylinder I just couldn't get used to. I'm glad it works for you, though.

I've owned V8's before.....I know what they are like.
Like I told Jill, today's three-cylinder turbos work for a LOT of buyers....at least in small vehicles. For proof, just look at how well a number of them are selling.
Probably the best thing that we (and, by "we", I mean the driving-public-at-large) can do to help lower gas prices is to simply reduce demand for it. That means driving in the most economical manner, not making unnecessary trips, keeping tire pressures up, clearing excess weight out of the vehicle, and maybe forgoing that long driving-vacation this year. If gas stations cannot sell much fuel at $4-5 a gallon or more, they won't have much choice but to lower the price....even if it cuts into their profits.

And your typical inline 4 feels terrible...
