CarPlay
2. Multiple people did reply directly about it, you just clearly didn't read what they said.
My response is they did not compare reaction times using CarPlay to reaction times interacting with a car's native infotainment system. There is no question that vehicle infotainment is distracting, but it exists and its not going away, the question is whether or not CarPlay is more or less distracting. My money would be on it being less distracting because its less complicated and Apple does a better job designing a UI. You see the difference there between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the same sort of thing but the implementation in Android causes slightly less distraction.
Additional technology like automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist helps mitigate the risks of distraction by intervening when a driver isn't paying attention.
The other issue is CarPlay uses a LOT of battery power, so you're going to want your phone charging anyways.
I wouldn't want to rely on those technologies because I'm distracted by apple carplay. They aren't perfect and they might not work when you need them to.
I've done 4 cross country trips pre-nav and the maps were easy to use but middle American roads are very easy to navigate. Go to San Francisco or Los Angeles and I thank god for the Nav functions where it tells you what lane to be in. Try LA...oh my god. There are sections where multiple highways intersect and its complete cluster to move around in and if you get stuck in the wrong highway, you just lost an hour of time. lol.
The new cars have augmented reality right on the windshield where it tells you which lane to be in during a nav session. Thats da bomb...

Wireless CarPlay works fine on my X5. Some do complain about it draining the battery but you can just place it on the charging pad. It charges for you and the phone in that location can also be used as a key if you need. Unfortunately due to shortage, many don't come with wireless chargers.
Don't quote me on this... but I believe that BMW's CarPlay uses Wifi to make the handshake first then BT takes over. You can try to turn off BT and see that Wifi alone won't connect your phone. Audio is indeed transferred via Wifi. Thus, sound is transferred in higher quality (than BT). This seems to be the main selling point for some BMW owners. I personally don't have a need for it because I use direct transfer. And after a few frozen maps, I choose not to use it. Only when my wife sends me location via text.

I actually find BMWs native idrive better than Carplay. Almost everyone I know uses Carplay in their BMWs, but I've been using idrive since version 1, so I'm more used to it and find Carplay redundant.

A long time ago, I did use a smartphone for navigating places (on and off; often I wouldn't even be bothered to use the navigation because I didn't need to) but that encouraged lazy behavior, which is what these systems do a great job of. I see it quite a bit. I pass by people and they have their phones mounted on the dash with navigation up. My wife can't remember how to get anywhere because her phone tells her how to do it. She doesn't need to remember the directions.

The wireless charger is absolutely useless, it charges too slow and the phone gets super hot if its streaming music via BT. I bought a mount from Kuda and charge my phone with a cable - if anyone needs a good mount I highly recommend them, I've used them in all of my BMWs and Lexus cars, very high quality integrated products.
