Can we talk about something else other than bickering about how using gps is for dummies? This is a complete waste of time, no one cares what you like or don't like. You aren't going to convince someone to not use GPS or to use it.

I was hoping to learn more about OEM GPS or nav systems I have never used like BMW's system, or see what other people have used that they like, so when I need to replace my car I have an idea on what to look for, given how much going to a dealership sucks.

You're right. I have my ways of driving and someone else has their own.

I just don't like when people say I need GPS to get somewhere.

I never said that. if you want to use map, fine by me. I have emergency maps in my car in the back, just in case.

I have been lost in an unfamiliar city before many times, remember I have driven cars far longer than GPS systems have existed, it is very stressful...especially in a city with dangerous areas, etc. And...why get lost if you don't have to get lost?! A map or printed directions are just directional tools, and they are technology in and of themselves. Have you ever used a compass to find your direction? That is technology and its a tool. What is the issue with using a navigation system as a directional tool?!?

What in your mind is righteous about using a map or printed directions and unseemly about using a GPS navigation system?

Well this thread is about Apple CarPlay, not OEM navigation systems. Basically, all navigation systems are the same they just have subtle differences.

The only person that starts these discussions down this path is you, you constantly come out and say that WE don't need these technologies and they make us lazy and stupid. Nobody is trying to tell you that you need to use them, they are defending themselves to you for using them and liking them. This is 100% on you.

If you aren't interested in technology, just don't participate in the discussions we have about technology. EVERY time a tech topic comes up you have to post saying that you hate technology and we are all lazy because we like it.

THIS was your post that started this:

Here is a chart that illustrates my point:

All of this tech has gone completely overboard. You don't need to do all this garbage while driving. A phone call, texting your buddy or spouse, and all this other stuff can wait until you get to your destination.

Some of you wonder (and probably laugh deep down) why I still use CD's and prefer buttons. Well guess what... they're much easier to use while driving. Hands already on the wheel and want to skip to the next song. Press the up arrow on the steering wheel. Done. No tapping some ridiculous screen several times and getting caught up into all this different content.

Everyone acts like they can't live without carplay and all this crap. We did for years so it's not impossible. This world is just too wrapped up in their precious technology to not know any better. They think they must have the latest thing or their lives are no good.

Now, I would like to hear all your arguments as to why you think carplay and android auto are so essential. This should be good.
This was supposed to be a discussion ABOUT CarPlay, not a thread justifying its existence and the existence of all other technology to you. Whenever a topic of technology comes up, we already know you hate it and will never use it.

Honestly, just the whole touchscreen aspect and everything that goes into it. I don't need a GPS for getting somewhere, I like the old-school experience.

Agreed it is about CarPlay , but I did like your insight about BMW's nav, dealers do not give you enough time to play with the car to see if you like it or not. They should really allow you to do a short time rental of the service fleet, given a car isn't in use, like a few days.

Also the great thing about CarPlay is I use Siri to listen to messages, intimate calls, find gas or get directions ,etc. I actually do not need to touch or look at the phone with CarPlay, though the phone is clearly within my vision without taking my eyes off the road. Now if Siri could get better , it would be win/win

Then don't use it. We don't need to hear that in every conversation about technology. We want to talk about the technology not have an argument about the very existence of technology.

Most dealers will let you take a demo for a few days to try it out...ask if they will let you do that. You can also rent one on Turo etc.

Thats one thing I love about Car Play, its always the same. So to me, the navigation in the car doesnt really matter anymore.

Whats everyone's experience with wireless CarPlay ? It seems few cars support it, kinda whack. I think its going to take forever to get wireless carplay in Toyota/Lexus. They just added USBC ports to the 2023 models, I bet they only put out 12w to boot 🤣🤣🤣

Both of my cars are BMW's which have wireless Car Play but we're not Apple users so never have tried it. I haven't seen any widespread issues or problems on BMW forums from users though.

You came to the internet to learn something, and not to bicker? What's wrong with you?

Revisionist history. No one said YOU need to use GPS. YOU are the one who questioned why anyone else needed GPS and new-fangled tech (not the 1st time), and brought us all down this path.

I have wireless CarPlay on a few of my cars and I actually find it to be more reliable / stable than wired CarPlay. I've had dropouts using wired connections on my BMWs in particular, fewer using wireless. On my Land Rover, wireless was added as a free over the air feature update and it's been rock solid. The initial wired-only implementation occasionally dropped out. On my Bronco, again the wireless implementation is absolutely solid. Apart from stability, the other advantage over wired is the ability to keep the phone in your pocket and/or more easily fit a larger phone onto a wireless charging pad. Wireless CarPlay doesn't use Bluetooth for its connection or for audio streaming, data is transported via a dedicated Wifi network.
