Whats baffling is that people believe EVs suddenly catch on fire plugging in. Does your phone catch on fire when you plug in every night? In my decades of using battery powered devices, i have 0 instances of fire
Do EVs suddenly catch on fire at Superchargers where the amount of energy is 25-50X greater than the outlet you have in your house? In fact the amount of energy my EV sucks in relative to the size of the battery is MINUSCULE vs. the amount of energy sucked in from my iphone during charging.
Its not like EV batteries are any more prone to fire than the stuff in the iPhone. Last I checked, the batteries are both supplied by Panasonic
Has anyone here actively ever had a car catch on fire on them at any point? I have......and it's always leaking gas/an idiot owner. The plus side is you can smell the issue, electrical fires not so much but it's not as likely to be an issue.

Yep, that's the thing, most times it is user error, and most times it has nothing to do with gas, it is usually electrical short or physical damage.
Back in 2012 my neighborhood was flooded by Sandy, it destroyed most of the cars, flooded homes, etc. Well, when the water receded over the next few days, my idiot neighbor decided it was a good idea to try and start his Camry. Good thing I was doing some work, because not only he's an idiot but he also has two left hands that he doesn't know how to use. He ran to me in complete panic - his car started and his center console caught on fire from an electrical short. Good thing there was still a few inches of water on the road, I was grabbing it to put the fire out.
LOL. I'm sure a Condo Association and Underground parking structure owner know more than a study that was sourced from data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), and government recall data from Recalls.gov from the links in prior posts.

Well, let's be realistic here. First of all, there is no conclusive data to determine whether ICEs or EVs are more prone to fires, so I don't want to continue to pointlessly bicker. However, it is simple common sense that EVs and ICEs catch on fire under different circumstances. ICEs generally do not spontaneously combust while being parked, most ICE fires occur on the road, most likely due to a major malfunction, while the car is attended. However with EVs, no matter how rare, Lithium batteries explode while an unattended car is being charged, and these fires are impossible to put out or contain, so they take out all the cars around them, and it ends up being an epic disaster.
Whether it is a big concern or not, everyone can decide for themselves, but it is enough for some parking facilities to ban EVs, for GM to stop selling the Bolt EV, and for several manufacturers to stop selling certain electronic devices.
