Jay Leno definitely does NOT do car reviews. Every single car he's discussed on his channel, he's raved about it -
I disagree that he 'definitely does not do car reviews'. Did you watch his EQS video all the way through? Yes, he is guided by one of the car's designers in the first half and asks easy questions. But when he drove the car, by himself, he made a lot of comments about it, his impressions, you see him operate the controls, etc. i'd say that's very much a review.
even a car that is made by the company you love so much - Tesla. A Model Y, and he couldn't stop raving about it. That sums it up right there regarding his car videos.
When he reviewed the model Y, it was pretty new. And of course the acceleration is mind blowing, but he also liked the Y's practicality. But as he says in this EQS video, tesla is a performance brand with some luxury features but it isn't a luxury brand, while mercedes is a luxury brand.
certainly he's a true car enthusiast, he finds something positive in everything he comments on, and maybe he chooses to only review stuff that he likes and not be yet another critic on youtube. Leno doesn't have to make a living from youtube.
One thing i didn't appreciate was when he was saying how much gas a jag he had used to use, saying it was $80 a fill up so he'd tell his wife they could either go out for dinner, or he could fill the car, but not both. The guy is worth hundreds of millions so that was pretty insensitive imo.
But anyway, i do think he's doing the public a service by interviewing others and giving his impressions on certain cars, so that to makes him a reviewer.
even the 'king' doug demuro isn't generally negative, he points out 'quirks and features' instead, which is a clever way to keep it light while pointing out questionable or odd aspects to a given vehicle.

Its still not really a review. He doesn't set out to review a car, he talks about a car. Its a subtle difference but its pretty clear.
Doug DeMuro doesnt really review cars either until he gets to his "DougScore"
Doug DeMuro doesnt really review cars either until he gets to his "DougScore"
He reviews all the design details and features of vehicles. How is that not a 'review'? I guess to you a review has to have a rating/score? I haven't looked at a car magazine in years but besides 0-60 and skidpad type numbers I don't remember mags giving 'scores' except in head to head comparisons/tests.
He points out "quirks and features", the goal is just different than a review. He doesn't compare and contrast vehicles with their competitors, etc.
When you review something you critique it or pass judgement on it and he just doesn't do that typically until he starts driving the car. Somebody simply writing about a car or presenting a car's features to a camera is not a review.
Lets put it this way, if someone filmed a video about a movie and simply synopsized the plot, is that a review? No. When someone just talks about a car and doesn't make any judgements about it or comparisons to its competitors...thats just a "synopsis" of the car, not a review.
Alex on Autos reviews cars. TFL reviews cars, Motor Trend etc reviews cars. Jay Leno, Doug DeMuro, even Motorweek typically present cars they don't review them. I enjoy both approaches, they are just a little bit different.
Its actually very enjoyable. I'm not a Jay Leno fan, I think he's a jackass but his love of cars comes through on his channel and hes really enjoyable to watch in that venue. He doesnt "review" cars, he just talks about them and why he loves them. You'll never see negative feedback like that there.
If you look at his career and listen to what a lot of his peers say about him, he’s stepped on the necks of a lot of people to get where he is, and he’s just not a very kind or nice guy.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. He does way more than just talk about a car and list specs or a 'synopsis'... he says when he thinks things are strange or poorly designed, or great, he talks about material quality and a whole bunch of things.

A distinction without a difference. Just different styles. TFL is click bait now. AonA is so boring and long-winded i can't watch the guy any longer.
You say motorweek doesn't review cars!!? They disagree with you.
Of course Motorweek disagrees with me lol. I can count the critical reviews Motorweek has ever made on one hand lol.
I stand by what I said, these are car presentations not car reviews. There’s a clear difference to me, and others who have posted saying the same thing. I think my movie review vs synopsis comparison is pretty good.

👍👍. Same here.
I also agree both approaches are fine, but a presentation is not a review.

After all of the AoA's, Doug;s, TFL's, Redline's of the World Motorweek is a welcome break. Yes it's predictable and low key but that's not always bad.

I like the reviews by the video above by Autotrader and Throttle House and Straight Pipes as they inject humor in their reviews. Car Wow also does great reviews and gives both positive and negative aspects of the car.

I like Car Wow. Mat Watson is usually fun and interesting. I like his "stick of truth" for determining if exhaust tips and side vent are real or fake..
