This is a very strange forum, as it is very challenging to offer or mention any criticism about any of the Hyundai family of brands. That said, I don't remember if I commented on this new car. I am not sure if it has its own design language or not, I don't think the design in the pictures is as great as people on here are claiming, but the actual videos of the new car, the design does look good. I was lucky to see the new GV80 in Toronto, I think the interior is very good. I think the weakness is where the HVAC controls are located as well as the dials in the center console, but the dial was better than the remote touch from Lexus. The PRNDL dial was not very good. Overall, the GV80 interior and how it feels reminded me of the Lexus LC500, so if this G80 has anything like the materials, then Genesis has a big winner. The two engine offerings do look competitive, the smaller engine I think is better. I think it is disappointing that the power numbers of the new 3.5tt max out around 380hp, the Lexus LS with the same displacement achieves 416hp and Lincoln hits 400hp from their 3.0 and I think Infiniti clears 400hp....so the Koreans here are behind at being true leaders for engine tech, especially for a brand new motor. There also is no hybrid option either. Will this new G80 win comparison tests? YES. Is this new G80 an excellent achievement? YES. Does the new G80 have flaws? IT APPEARS IT DOES. Will the new G80 makes those who buy BMW, MB or Lexus badges switch? PROBABLY NOT
Sadly, bad timing for Genesis, the US auto market is going to crap because of COVID-19. And I do think Genesis really needs dealers to make their products sell well.
Peak power numbers(especially horse power on paper) mean nothing in todays turbo engines. The G90 is down 40 hp compared to the LS500 but they post near identical acceleration figures.
The Q50 Red Sport 400 is slower than the G70 and M340i despite more hp and there are complaints about the turbo in the Aviator not feeling like 400 hp. The CT6 3.0TT despite more power and less weight is no faster than the Genesis G80 Sport. Numbers aren't everything and the focus on more low end torque and a broader power band is where the bigger focus is.
The issue with these EV variants is that they leverage an ICE architecture which compromises efficiency. A bottoms up build with a skateboard battery design with dedicated EV platform can only compete with the new EVs coming out. They can spout a modular design works but I have yet to see anything of that nature get remotely close to the better EVs. I'm surprised their building an EV variant of this.
In the MT comparison w/ the 2018MY G90 and LS500 (as well as the 740e and 2017 Conti), both vehicles got a 5.3s 0-60 time, but the LS pulled away a little at the quarter mile (13.7s vs. 13.9s).
t.
I think you are referring to the MT comparison. The LS500 is 250lbs heavier but does pull away. Would be interesting to see what the RWD LS500 would be like vs the G90 in RWD form...The LS also stops better....MT also says the G90 has 5in more headroom and more than 5in front leg room...so maybe the numbers are off. But good post

That's where the Ls failed. If they wanted LS to be sport oriented, they should have put in a much more powerful power train to fulfill that mission. 0-60 in 5.3s is molasses slow in that segment for sport exec sedans. A shrunken down LS with less content and that engine would have been a wonderful GS.

The G70 is deceptively fast (as many M owners have learned on my Milwaukee/Chicago commutes ) but then it's much smaller and lighter. So we're not talking apples to apples and the twin turbo spooling up on a much heavier car is going to be noticeable. Genesis seems to have fallen love with that 3.3 TT and the torque numbers are good. As LCTJ said, Lexus has them beat. I have not driven a G80 (and the accompanying mass), but my G70 runs with M3s all day long...
Love that G80 made it to another generation. Likely due to the size of the segment within the Korean market, as well as sights on Europe, where the E/5/A6 class is still substantial.

You're right. E-Class sales make up half of Mercedes' total sales numbers in Korea. The Koreans have not lost their minds in the CUV craze yet.
Speaking of E-Class, here's a passably translated comparison with the new G80 and current E-Class (be sure to turn on subtitles):

Thanks for the response.

Great achievement no doubt with what Hyundai has done for the Genesis G70.

The SAE spec is under 5 seconds. That is for the RWD models
Really impressive. Looks great while in motion as I expected. I can't wait to see these in-person - I bet it looks great (and bet it looks ridiculous at night). My only question is at the 10 minute mark - the window controls being the "metal" look. I'd have to see that in person. Other than that, it continues to be a homerun in my eyes. Exterior really reminds me of the CLS which is an awesome thing to say IMO.
Man, Mark Del Rosso was doing his best to skirt around those questions.
Interesting to hear about the 6 vehicle lineup for 2021, including that new SUV and EV. We already know about the GV80 and GV70, so will that SUV be the rumored GV90? If so, Lexus better hurry up with their new flagship SUV.
