The whole "its a Hyundai" thing from Lexus fans is really absurd.
If anything, I would expect Lexus fans to have more self-awareness than that, since "it's a Toyota!" has been an insult used against Lexus since its inception. But at least there is some truth to that statement since over half of Lexus's lineup shares its platforms, engines, and other components with cheaper Toyota volume products. And Toyota isn't helping ease that image by killing off its brand-bespoke vehicles like the GS in favor of the ES, a Kentucky-built Toyota Avalon in Lexus clothing. At least with Genesis, I don't have to worry about the G80 being replaced by a gussied-up Hyundai Sonata anytime soon.
Just out of curiosity, what do you find cheaper about it? It's a little smaller inside than the G90, and probably doesn't have as much standard equipment. But all Genesis products seem to have superb material build-quality, excellent materials, and fit/finish inside and out.....
it's a bit like like the difference between a lexus es and a lexus ls. both nice vehicles, but built to different price points and use different designs and materials (and features).
Personally, I prefer the general overall interior design/layout of the (present) G80 over the G90 even more...although not quite as plush inside as the G90, I think it has better-looking styling-theme inside. But, like most styling-evaluations, that is purely subjective on my part....others may disagree.
fair enough. i would describe the g80 as maybe a bit more 'conventional'... but based on your post, thank you, i decided to look at some pics at least...
g80
g90
and i see the g80 is nice and there's obvious similarities, but the g90's sweeping top dash across the whole width is a big difference, the much bigger screen, and obviously there's a lot of wood. the pic i posted is the g80 sport though which has (apparently real!) carbon fiber inserts, which is nice.
anyway, thanks for making me take a closer look at the g80. it's not quite as 'fancy' as the g90, but it's definitely very nice.
i'm honestly not about 'fancy' anyway. i actually had some feelings of guilt when i got the g90, thinking others may think i'm 'showing off' which has never ever been my intent with any vehicle or any possession. i like the g90's roominess, quiet and smooth ride, and yes obviously its features, but 'bling' is not my thing, which is why the 2020 g90 is probably not for me. even this new g80, the subject of the thread of course, may be too 'fancy' for me although if the ride is supremely quiet and smooth it may win me over.

but more seriously, that was not always the case. when i got (admittedly a heck of a long time ago now) my gs400, it was absolutely state of the art on interior and features... blew away mercedes, bmw, audi, etc.

You work hard for your money, and contribute a whole lot to CL and Car Chat...both as a poster and moderator. IMO, there's no reason for you to feel any guilt at all about your purchase. In fact, on top of that, you probably got more, for less money, than a number of people (even on CL) who drive the G90's competitors.....S-Class, 7-series, A8, Lexus LS, Cadillac CT6, etc....
Lexus as whole updates their car slow, not defending them - I wish they would add every nice feature every year sure. Do I care enough to go buy a Genesis over it no, not yet I feel the quality isnt there yet. Lincoln continental looks better buy I guess If I look at the sales Data. Tesla has everyone beat.. by looking at the data below
The mid sized luxury car as a whole market is trending towards the SUV and CUV; considering the Genesis is a car with the updates, it didn't really sell as well too. I am Lexus fan yes - almost everyone in this forum is, i have owned pretty much every Lexus made apart from LFA in the last 20 years and they make very nice cars. Cars that I can enjoy without breakout down or even when sell them, deprecating their value.
I did not mean to offend anyone calling Genesis a KIA, the first Genesis I looked at was at my local. Kia/Hyundai dealership I know they are opening their own dealerships now. Competition as a whole is good for all brands more choices for us folks.

Not to mention the lack of a 360 camera, proper lane centering system, and other autonomous safety tech. And since the car had a refresh in 2016, there's really no excuse for any of these omissions. The G80 wasn't a much newer vehicle (came out in 2014 as the Hyundai Genesis) and yet by the end of its run it had all these omissions and more. The GS remained a dinosaur.
Like what? Cause it sure didn't translate into sales, otherwise the GS wouldn't have been cancelled. The complacency of Lexus in updating the vehicle properly resulted in its death.
That you keep calling Genesis "a Kia" demonstrates your bias. How does it show its age then? Please, give me an actual argument instead of this fanboy tripe.
Wow! No other car increased their sales from one year to the next by 250 units other than Tesla with a whopping 22k units. That's a majorly giant sucking sound happening in the market place. Everyone else is simply treading water with no real sales growth.

More like the Lexus GS vs the LS. The G80 is nicer inside than an ES.
Yes, the styling was beautiful.
The current G80 is big and spacious.
It also had a magnificent ride thanks to both its size and weight.
However, the huge size, performance, braking, fuel efficiency, maneuverability and dynamics got the better of me.
I don't know if the new Gen G80 has lost any weight but as you indicated the current gen is porky. The AWD 3.8 V6 weighs 4,350lbs. and the AWD 3.3TT a hefty 4,674lbs. That's in SUV territory. Hopefully, the new gen is at least 200 pounds or so lighter.
The forthcoming 2021 G80 will have a difficult task ahead to try to emulate the success of the ageing current Hyundai Genesis/Genesis G80 Series which only undersold the:
1) ES with peak annual sales of 72k in 2012-18, and current peak of 51k in 7ES.
2) E Class with peak annual sales of 69.8k in 2009-16, and current peak of 49k in 2016-23; which is great sales considering the higher price of E Class.
3) 5 Series with peak annual sales of 56k in 2010-17, and current peak of 43k in 2017-24.
With peak annual sales of a reasonably impressive31k in it first full year 2015 & 7k last year, the ageing 2014-21 Hyundai Genesis/Genesis G80 Series managed to solidly outsell the:
1) 2012-20 4GS which only peaked at 23k.
2) 2011-18 A6 which also only peaked at 23k, although new 2018-25 A6 managed 17.8k last year.
3) 2015-Onwards Jaguar XF annual peaked at only 6.6k.
On the other hand, the full size Hyundai Equus/Genesis G90 Series has NEVER done well.
1) Current 2013-20 S Class annual peaked with 25k in its first full year, and even managed 12.9k last year - its very last full year.
2) Current 2015-22 7 Series annual peaked with 12.9k in its first full year, and even managed 8.8k last year, with an all new model due 2022.
3) Current 2018-25 5LS annual peaked with 9.3k in its first full year, yet still managed 5.5k last year.
4) Even 2010-17 A8 annual peaked at 6.3k, though that was a long time ago.
5) While 2010-20 XJ annual peaked at 5.4k, though that was a long time ago too.
However, disappointingly the 2009-16 Equus could only manage peak annual sales of 3.9k, while more importantly the current 2016-23 G90 has only achieved peak annual sales of a paltry 4.3k with a poor 2.2k in sales last year.
Likewise, the all new G70 compact has not done well either, with only a lack lustre11.9k sales in its first full year.
The class leading 2011-18 3 Series amassed an annual peak of 142k, with the all new 2018-25 amassing 66k last year.
Likewise, the current 2014-21 C Class amassed an annual peak of 86k, with a more than respectable 49k last year.
Even the 2013-Onwards Infiniti Q50 annual peaked with 44k in 2016, and sold a lusty 25k last year.
Even the ageing dinosaur 2013-Onwards 3IS managed >51k in its first full year, with a respectable 14.9k last year.
Even the slow selling all new 2015-22 A4 managed 34k in its first full year, and a decent 26k last year.
The G70 compact has only managed to outsell the 2015-Onwards Jaguar XE compact which could only muster 9.2k - keeping in mind that 9.2k is not far from G70's weak 11.9k.
Thus, in short, only the current ageing 2014-21 Hyundai Genesis/Genesis G80 Series with "contemporary" type styling has done well according to consumers.
While the full size G90 and the compact G70 have NOT been well received by American consumers.
G70 & G90 are essentially selling at the bottom of their respective compact & full size classes.
The forthcoming all new luxury midsize 2021 Genesis G80 has big shoes to fill...

E350 starts at $54K
530i starts at $53.9
A6 starts at $54.9 (AWD standard)
XF starts at $51.1
S90 starts at $51.2 (AWD standard)
Obviously MSRP's don't mean much in this segment that is heavily incentivized with high leases, but the 5-7K lower starting point, not even getting to comparably equipped, should help Genesis offer competitive lease programs hopefully.
MSRP pricing went up by huge amount and now only undercuts the Germans by few grand for 4cyl.
The V6 is same price point as Germans.
Considering G80 has no brand cache, no dealership network and is not exceptional in any way - I’m not sure how they expect to sell these cars.
Lease programs drive sales for this segment and G80 prices need to be about $100 less per month to justify consumers to go with a Genesis vs German established luxury brand.

The Genesis vehicles will be MUCH better equipped for the money.

It is going to be very tough to sustain volumes unless they offer very attractive lease programs. They are making some very nice vehicles and if were in the market i would look at a used one once they hype is over
