Cadillac XT4
Not on the S class they don’t. There are couple of colors they do. But for most part metallic is not an extra charge. With G wagon, there are 13 standard colors that are no charge. Only the designo colors are extra.
It's not "OK". It's industry standard, and it's done by lux makers, more or less, because they "can." Upcharging for LED headlights, back up cameras (before they were federally mandated), leather, etc., etc. Automakers have learned that customers will pay extra on these cars for features that are standard on Corollas and Civics, so they don't leave $$ on the table.
Caddy is just following suit. Will it work for them? We'll see; because trying to be "just like" BMW has failed them to this point.

I do agree that luxury brands do it because they can get away with it. It is all part of marketing -- and marketing is seldom logical or "ethical".
If this practice works for a brand, they may continue with it. If it does not, we will likely see it discontinued (perhaps with the cost buried elsewhere).
I wouldn't call it an industry standard; some automakers do it while others do not, and there is no right or wrong about it.
