Let me get this straight. If I am interpreting this correctly. Some of you on here based on the responses are suggesting that becuase you are buying a “luxury” vehicle, it is ok to charge extra for paint or for the color you want? That is absurd. Yes, some special paint colors or processss might warrant this, but not the way GM is going about it. Or any other brand for that matter.

it's not just about what the customer is willing to pay, it's also about volume. A 'special' paint color on an already limited vehicle can result in misuscule demand and the mfr has little choice but to charge extra for such a limited run.

Sorry. Makes no sense. A Chevrolet Cruze has extra paint options, a Cruze is not a limited model like you say. All the paint choices should already be built into the MSRP. There should be no reason ever for a $1000 paint addition to a $100K Escalade.

You're making my point. The cruze is huge volume compared to an xt4 so they can afford to make a few percent in fancy blue or whatever without extra setup costs.

The Cruze has extra cost paint options. I did not say it correctly.
Luxury cars have very high inflated price tags, it is very easy for luxury manufacturers to build the cost into the price of the vehicle.

Ok so what's your point? they charge more for coupes than sedans too even when coupes are no more and usually less to produce.
The point is, you are buying a luxury car. There should be no reason for the cost of paint to be extra because you want a color that is different than white or black. It should expected that you get to chose a color and not be expected to pay more. Point being, you are paying premium to begin with. Same thing for leather, there should be no reason you have to pay extra for the real thing.
Why is GM charging more for metallic paint while Lexus makes their metallic paint included in the price for an ES?
Toyota has two available metallic colors for the Corolla Hatch, they don’t charge you extra whereas you have to pay extra for metallic with the Cruze hatch?
Just absurd.

It's not "OK". It's industry standard, and it's done by lux makers, more or less, because they "can." Upcharging for LED headlights, back up cameras (before they were federally mandated), leather, etc., etc. Automakers have learned that customers will pay extra on these cars for features that are standard on Corollas and Civics, so they don't leave $$ on the table.
Caddy is just following suit. Will it work for them? We'll see; because trying to be "just like" BMW has failed them to this point.

GM is doing this across their line up. Toyota does not do this. MB does not do this. Not sure who else does it. I am just referring to the paint. Some paints are extra but it is one offs for each brand. GM is charging jf you want a different color other than the basic ones.

In the end I don't think it matters much because GM usually has big money off. An example of a dealer in my area

MB charges extra for metallic colors. For example on their popular GLC it's $720 and they have a red metallic that's $1080 and a diamond white that's $1515. I'm sure other models are similar.
