Bye bye non hybrid!! Hybrid engine is smooth to me at least and efficient. Looks like it picked up 17hp and now the PHEV is up to 320hp and can DC charge. Now if it gained weight remains to be seen if performance is affected.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Toyota does use three-cylinder power plants in their GR high-performance cars.

(I'm not holding my breath LOL)
I saw one of those on the rode a while back and thought the same thing. The two-door RAV4 looked so cool.

‘Nissan went with a small 1.5L inline 3 cylinder in the Rogue. Car and Driver calls it “uninspiring”. Even has middling fuel economy.
Spoiler

According to car and driver.

It’s should be celebrated that Toyota kept the 4 cylinder instead of going to a 3

"Uninspiring" might look bad on a sales brochure. Lol

Ford also uses a 1.5L turbo three in lower-trim versions of the Escape and Bronco Sport.

No love lost on the departure of the gas only engine. The hybrid was massively better. They did a great job with this.

In engineering we always have to work with tradeoffs and compromises.

On modern cars it seems they want it all the mpg they can get and this leads to small engines that are overly complex and working too hard.

Rant over! Lol 😃

Actually, those small turbo threes don't work all that hard in most normal driving conditions. What torque they DO make is typically at lower RPMs, not far above idle-speeds.....so you can get them rolling from rest without too much throttle.

In my Encore GX, for example, max torque of 177 ft.-lbs. is around 1600-1700 RPM, so getting it rolling is not too stressful on the engine. In fact, it has more power than I typically use, particularly with my conservative driving style.

In my younger years I could kill a turbo 3 fast. Lol
It might be ok for older and more mature drivers but young people will kill it.

Always in the boost. Lol
Toyota was smart to keep the 4 banger, Imo. 😃

4-cylinder hybrid is a hard pass for several people I know, they all have a Toyota V6 SUV of some description and want to buy new but can't get past the engine.
