Everyone should just copy Mercedes. If we’re going to have these silly shifters. Might as well copy the best. Mercedes has been using that since like 2005.
The shifter that BMW used from 2007 till about 2 years ago was great. The nub they’re using now is stupid.
I agree, the BMW shifter to me was really nice and I don’t love the nub shifter. I have a nub shifter in my Cayenne and it’s just stupid even though it save some real estate on the center console.
I don't really get it, I've driven 100s of different types of cars and I've ever had an issue going into the gear I've wanted. It's all whatever but stuff like the dial and monostable shifters save space
Ask Anton Yelchin…you can’t because he’s dead. Because his e shifter was in the wrong gear.
That ZF shifter was awful because it didn’t have a separate button for park. And (putting my flame suit on) always set your parking brake when exiting your car. That way it won’t matter if the car fails to go into park.
Skill issue. Don't leave the car if it's not in park with the park brake on.
Using the gearshift should not require skill, that’s the point. I had the same Jeep with the same shifter, it was awful. You always missed the gear you were trying to use, they went back to a traditional shifter after that for a reason.

I always use my parking brake but most people don’t. There shouldn’t be any question whether or not you have put the vehicle in park.

You generally don't have to on a level surface where the vehicle won't roll and place a strain on the transmission park-prowl if you don't use the brake. It also saves wear and tear on the brake-cable and/or electronic switch-actuator. Parking on any significant grade, though, yes, I'd use it. I apply it first and make sure the vehicle is secure and won't roll, then shift into Park.

Thats not correct. You should use your parking brake whenever you park. That’s why it’s called a parking brake. If you read the manual on any vehicle or any driving manual it will say that. Your car could always be bumped etc and roll even on a flat surface.
Both of my cars automatically apply and remove the parking brake these days.
Both my Tesla's automatically go into P if you are at a stop and you open the drivers side door. Model Y has a stalk shifter on the steering wheel (right side) and the new Model 3 has the shifter on the left side of the screen when you step on the brakes. Slide up for forward and down for reverse, with backup buttons near the rear view mirror area. Very easy to use even having to move out of tight spaces or when in a pinch.
Ioniq 5 has a twist function on the right stalk, also very easy to use except you twist it clockwise to reverse and counter clockwise for driving, button on the stalk for park. If you open the driver's door, it will stay in gear but scream at you, but it won't roll as auto brake hold is engaged when you are a full stop

Bingo, both my D4s have an idiotic shifter like the infamous Jeep unit that you can press too far (two detents vs one) easily and overshoot R or N or whatever you actually wanted. Took me about 2 min to figure out on the test drive......plus I also use the parking brakes and the A8s will go to park if you open the door with it still in a driven gear.
I actually disabled that since it prevents creeping with the door open. I also have belt warnings etc all disabled since it's just annoying when shuffling cars around

Yep, specifically here is the process for the Encore GX:

It can be dangerous to get out of the vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in P (Park) with the parking brake firmly set. The vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. You or others could be injured.
To be sure the vehicle will not move, even when you are on fairly level ground, use the steps that follow. If you are pulling a trailer, see Driving Characteristics and Towing Tips 0 246
To shift into P (Park):
1. Hold the brake pedal down and set the parking brake. See Electric Parking Brake 0 212
2. Hold the button on the shift lever and push the lever toward the front of the vehicle into P (Park).
3. Turn the ignition off.
Other parts of the manual describe how the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is automatically set and unset at stoplights when Adaptive Cruise is enabled.
I did get out in the snow in the S580 today, we had about 8.5 inches. it did GREAT! Much better than the S560, I can only assume its because it doesn't have the wide staggered tires in the back...really solid and confidence inspiring
Just to show how deep the unplowed snow was, and this is with the car in its high suspension mode
This I thought was cool. Every time the tracton control kicked in, which I really needed to give it enough gas to make it kick in, it dropped a pin on the map to show a slippery area. I wonder if it shares that information to all MBUX users?
