That was an RC prototype testing unit. There's also lots of videos of them performing well on icy roads and snow. I have no plans to get a Cyber Truck, doesn't really matter to me

Any vehicle can get stuck. I've done a fair bit of legit off roading I've seen every type of vehicle there is get high centered, stuck in mud, float down a river and worse.

I wouldn't take a Hummer off road it's too heavy.

I'm definitely not one of those adventurous types that would take my Y off road. It wasn't built for that anyway. It does handle slippery roads really well, sending power to wheels that need it, and pulling power from those that don't

Tesla traction control is awesome it will spin the tires unlike my Highlander which at times decides to send almost zero power to any wheel. If the road is super slick foot to the floor car won't move. I love the car but at times it felt dangerous.

This is proof that regardless of what people think of Elon, he's done a good job of turning a startup that most people thought was deemed to fail (Toyota even pulled all their investment out). I remember when the Model 3 was open to pre-orders, I laughed at my friends who were trying to get through to Tesla's website, smart phone in one hand and credit card in the other ready to shell down a $2k deposit for a car still a year away from release


Tesla Model Y Going To Be Top Selling Vehicle In The World In 2023

The numbers are not yet in, but it’s close enough. The Tesla Model Y was the top selling vehicle model in the world in the first quarter of 2023, in the second quarter of 2023, and in the third quarter of 2023. With Tesla’s best quarter by far always being the fourth quarter, and an expected 328,000 Model Y deliveries in the quarter, I think we can say with certainty that the Tesla Model Y will be the best selling vehicle model in the world this year. According to Tesla numbers tracker and analyst
, “Toyota Corolla will likely do around 1,080,000 units this year and Model Y around 1,220,000. So, 140,000 units or 13% higher.” That’s a significant gap, and the buffer in expectations is surely large enough by now that the result is clear. The Tesla Model Y — a fully electric car — will be the best selling car in the world across an entire calendar year. Congratulations to Tesla on this truly major milestone!

“Model Y is expected to be the world’s best-selling car this year with over 1.2 million sales. Unfortunately, this is under-reported in the media because Tesla doesn’t release Model Y sales numbers. I wish they would because Model Y is beating the Toyota Corolla,”
. And I fully agree. In fact, I used to push quite strongly for this — several years ago. I think I understood the reasoning for combining Model Y sales numbers with Model 3 sales numbers, but I believe it’s high time for a change. It is annoying and just looks bad that Tesla is unwilling to report model-specific numbers. Additionally, as Troy Teslike points out, there are plenty of cases now where something like the Model Y being the top selling vehicle in the world (quarter after quarter and for the year as a whole) goes massively underreported due to there being no official numbers. Tesla will likely put this highlight in its 4th quarter shareholder report, but who is going to pay attention and write a headline based on that? It’s a misunderstanding of the media and a missed opportunity to keep hiding these numbers.

Troy Teslike goes on: “Model Y was the best-selling car globally in Q1, Q2, and Q3 2023, but media coverage was limited without any official numbers from Tesla. I think people around Elon are too afraid to ask whether Tesla should report sales by model and region, as all other manufacturers do.” I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but I think it’s long past time for Tesla to join other major automakers and be more specific with model deliveries (and production).

I don’t want to take away from how impressive this milestone is, but there is one more matter to note. The Tesla Model Y sees so many sales in part because Tesla offers so few models. With just the Model 3 and Model Y as mass-market models, and the Model S and Model X as more expensive high-end options, if someone gets a Tesla, they are going to get logged under delivery numbers for one of those models — or, officially, for the combined total of two models! Other major automakers have their sales spread out across many more models. There’s long been a debate about which is the better course, and also about how the benefits of one approach versus the other might change as the company grows. In any case, though, it’s clear that if Tesla offered several models, the sales would be spread out more and the Model Y may not be the best selling vehicle in the world. One person, in response to Troy Teslike’s initial tweet about this, wrote: “Troy, it’s irrelevant. There’s no model breadth to the brand and BYD, VW and next year others will best Tesla on a brand basis for EV deliveries by a wide margin in their respective theaters.” Well, we will see what happens — in different core regions (the US, Europe, and China) and globally — but we will also see Tesla sales more spread out from the arrival of the Cybertruck (potentially at high volume by the end of the year) and perhaps from an announcement about a new, lower-cost Tesla model.

Whatever happens in 2024, though, Tesla deserves massive credit for achieving such a monumental title and breaking through against fossil-fueled vehicles in yet another major way. Congratulations to the whole team of 100,000+ employees across the world!

That's the off-road mode I was referring to. It does nothing for regen braking, which is our biggest concern. I heard they had a setting for it at some point, but removed it.

haven't driven in Chill mode yet, but if the roads are snow covered, I will be.

I drove my brother in laws Model 3 in Chill Mode, and it felt like something was off. Throttle response is muted

The first MY we test drove was in Chill. It seemed pretty quick at the time, but it was the first time we were in an EV. Still pretty torquey, but nothing like Standard mode. It seems like the better choice for a snow covered road, no? How much snow driving experience have you had?

I tried chill on icy roads it's fine but doesn't make winter driving easier, at least not for me. Maybe for someone that doesn't understand how to test for traction limit then drive accordingly.

I've driven in the snow a few times. Once driving through the mountains surrounding southern California in a snow storm, second time was traveling through the grapevine which is a mountain pass 100 miles north of Los Angeles, and the third time was I was routed through the high dessert because the grapevine was snowed out. All were in snow storms. One of them was in a 2004 Sienna with no traction control. That was scary. Also no snow tires...AS tires

I'm sure I'll have a better understanding once it snows here. I've been driving in snow my entire life. The worst was my '86 IROC-Z, but I drove it through 5 winters. The past 20 years we've had AWD SUV's, so no issue at all. I'm guessing you're right about chill mode not really making things better. What's your experience with regen braking in those conditions? We were always taught to let off the gas when things start going sideways, so not doing that will be something to get used to.

It's not much different than using conventional brakes.* I was able to get the ABS system to activate on a full throttle lift but I could do the same thing on any car via braking. On a RWD gas car you are correct if you start to slide don't apply power and ideally put the car in neutral. On an EV the traction control and ABS are so quick to respond it's not easy to induce a slide of any kind. I'd love to try this out in winter with summer tires see what the car does.

Manual transmission gas car is a problem in winter, if you lock brakes the engine can stall then you have no brake boost.

* it might be better to reduce regen setting for winter driving, it hasn't snowed enough yet for me to test this thoroughly.

Thanks @swajames for taking the time and showing me your Lightning today. what an amazing truck! I've driven an F-150 rental, and all I can say is, if more truck owners that don't have to do heavy duty towing get their hands on this, I don't think most will want to go back. Ford did a really good job, and hopefully they will improve this truck over the coming generations.

I look forward to getting my hands on the Cybertruck next!
