turbo introduces a whole set of reliability, durability, driveability issues that N/A cars dont have. Thats one reason why I do not like this trend towards turbos. If turbos were truly the answer, all car companies would be doing it, but they arent. The only reason more car companies are doing this is because of new mileage regulations.

Recall notice
Not sure why you quoted my post, as my point still stands. I said nothing about the reliability of their motors or their peripheral accessories that are run off the motor. You originally expressed concerns about their tri-turbo motor (which doesn't exist) being able to cool itself on a track. BMW's track record has indicated that cooling isn't a problem, but reliability certainly is. While the turbo V8 motors seem to be suffering from less problems, their reliability record (even for the 35d motors) has not been pretty.

i am relaxed

Ferrari doesnt even offer a carbon roof on the 458. they know that its just bling and any weight savings is negligible. carbon roof panels have little if any performance benefit. BMW's use of a carbon roof is just for bling, they spin it by comparing the weight vs steel and not aluminum. its all marketing.

the RCF is said to get a carbon package option. lets hope they keep it an option. the actual weight savings probably wont justify its price...

Its not bling. It reduces weight and lowers the COG. Very important for handling. Just because Ferrari doesn't do it doesn't mean its "bling".

yes but how much performance does it improve for the price. Thats the big question.

Ask BMW. Don't see a reason to put it there. Carbon fiber isn't a huge selling point imo.

Carbon roofs are much more about lowering the center of gravity and the inertial moment than they are about the weight saved in terms of gross vehicle weight.

For a driveshaft, the savings are even more significant since the entire weight of the driveshaft must have an angular acceleration applied by the engine in order to propel the vehicle. It's like the difference between spinning a 10 lb plate and a 20lb plate on a weight bar.

Moment of inertia is the same reason a mid engine car will turn-in easier than a front engine car.
