My 2025 NX 250 with the 18" wheels and run flat tires developed a leak in the passenger-side rear tire that was resulting in a loss of 2 psi per day. I could not see any obvious physical damage to the tire and I'm grateful that the Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerted me to the leak on a day-by-day basis. I have an AC powered tire inflator at home so it was easy to keep the tire topped off.
I did not purchase a wheel and tire hazard warranty from the Lexus dealer so I knew I was on my own to seek a repair. A local service station found that the tire had a Phillips head screw embedded in it and was deemed to be unfixable. They also said that their practice is to replace both tires "on the axle" when one fails. This particular service center did not have any readily available tires in the size I needed.
Since I am a Costco member, I contacted them and they said they have Michelin tires on sale. I have read others on this forum that have been pleased with CrossClimate2 tires and that's what I ended up buying. The Costco tire center technician confirmed that the tire was unfixable and asked if I still wanted the CC2's given that they are not run flats. I said yes, but other customers have declined these tires given they are not run flats.
I am pleased that the CC2's are noticeably quieter than the run flat tires that came with the NX and they ride somewhat better.
I have since purchased a 12-volt portable tire inflator - kept in the rear compartment - to deal with any similar issues in the future. All in all, an expensive lesson, but at least Costco provides a tire road hazard warranty at no additional cost.
Glad to hear it ended well, for all other contributors too! A decision based on knowledge and understanding is never a wrong one. Every car owner uses their car uniquely and so your educated decision is the one that satisfies your needs. I personally plan to not replace my RFT with same, but will be happy with my tire repair kit, aftermarket jack and air pump I have kept in my car no matter what type of tires I have on. Most likely will go with the CC2's, Pirelli's in my area are more expensive than the CC2's even at Costco, and I'm sure I'll be very plleased with my choice when I make it. If I'm lucky Michelin will come out with an improved tire better than the CC2's by then.
Thanks for the post. I am interested in the CC2's as an option when I replace my RF's. However, I inquired at the Costco near us a couple of months ago and I was told by the tire dept mgr that they would not honor the tire road hazard warranty if I put non run flat tires on a vehicle that had OEM RF's if I did not have a spare tire. Maybe I'll ask at another store.
The statement from your Costco retailer about not honoring their road hazard warranty for other than run flat tires makes no sense to me.
First, my Costco tire manager simply informed me that the CC2's are not run flats and it was up to me whether or not to proceed.
Secondly, the fine print of Costco's road hazard warranty says nothing about only honoring OEM replacement tires, but it does plainly state that the tires must be rotated and balanced at specified intervals as a condition of the warranty.
Thirdly, even "doughnut" spares are supposedly not better than run flats in that they have typically 50 mile/50 mph limitations. If my TPMS system says I have a leak, and I use my portable inflator to get me quickly to a service facility, I should be okay.
Finally, in the event of a catastrophic tire failure, I have a AAA membership that should allow a tow truck to come to my aid.
Please feel free to pick holes in my argument since I might learn something (always grateful for the advice offered by others in this forum).
I have no holes to pick in your argument, I agree with you. It didn't make any sense to me either when he told me that but that's what he said. I didn't review the warranty since I wasn't making a purchase. I've always bought tires at Discount but inquired at Costco since I have the membership and because out the door cost is cheaper since you don't pay extra for the road hazard warranty like you do at Discount.
A road hazard warranty should ONLY focus on dealing with road hazards that have impacted your tire's integrity, ie a leak or puncture or blow out caused by something striking the tire. If you don't rotate your tires your drive wheels will wear out faster than non drive tire positions, and that's a sign of poor maintenance as well as not keeping them properly inflated.
