Default Nail in Tire :(

I just took my RX350 in for its 15K service. Dealer found a nail in the rear tire that is too close to the sidewall to be fixed.

I'm now paying $530 for two new tires (I have the 19" wheels) and another $93 for alignment. Checking online and Costco, this actually isn't too bad, comparatively.I was advised against purchasing just one tire and what I've read so far confirms it.

This is my first new car. Every other time I've purchased tires, they came with a road hazard warranty. Is this not included with the new vehicle purchase? Is it too late to purchase these warranties for the tires (old or new)?

Of course now I'm going to worry about how best to rotate the tires in the future and one pair wearing out faster than the others--but I certainly couldn't justify buying four new tires after just 15K (two is expensive enough!).

I paid extra at time of purchase for road hazard. I'll grab the paperwork for the price.

Here is Tire Rack's road hazard:

Oh by the way, "ouch"!!! Hope it didn't tear up tire pressure monitor.

You have to be careful with tires. 9 out of 10 times that tire can be fixed. Salespeople will ALWAYS tell you it cannot. I saw this exact situation happen to friends 2x in the last month. If the nail is still on the tread by the side wall they say...its the side wall...not true! Sams Club pulls this line on everyone. that is why they say.... flat tires are fixed free!! They have yet to fix a flat tire. Its always NOT fixable. The last time this incident happened, I went to Walmart with my friend. In the Auto section we bought a flat repair kit for about $6.00. It had the tool and the sticky strips that you push into the nail hole. Less than 20 minutes all fixed!! $$$$$$$ SAVED!
In this economy they are squeezing every penny out of the customer due to the fact business is off big time.

Nonsense, I've done this myself since 1979. I have never had an issue, fixing the tire. Way back in the 80's on one occasion the side wall has a small nail puncture, I had a radial tube put in and a patch. The tire was good as new and a fraction of a new tire. Talk is cheap, experience is fact.

I would only use a plug temporarily until I could get the tire vulcanized patch on the inside.

Same thing happened to me about 2 months ago. Brought it to Walmart and they said it is not fixable, brought it to Lexus dealer and they said the same thing (too close to the sidewall). Dealer replaced 1 tire (I have 18s and it is about 10k) for about $281.

One week later, I realized that I had tires/wheels/and Windshield insurance (bought from the dealer for $650 for 5 years when bought the car), I submitted the claim and just got my check back. Although, they ONLY paid max $250 per tire I still feel pretty good.

Actually, the best way to repair a flat tire is use both a plug and a patch. A plug is used to keep belts from rusting and patch to seal the the hole.
This repair is almost as good as a new tire.

An intertube can be used for minor sidewall damage, but it can cause other problems with tire wear and heat.
True.I should have been clearer and posted added a patch and rubber plug.
