The wheel of our 2013 LS looks round but doesn't feel round when I have to do a U-turn and the wheel spins in my hands. It doesn't bother me but is definitely an unfamiliar sensation. Is it the same for everyone else too? Just want to make sure it's by design and not something wrong with my wheel or the steering column.
I am learning so much about our new car and keep finding ways to spend more time with her, er, the car. No wonder my wife is starting to get jealous.
Its not that it isn't round, its that the central hub is not 100% in the center of the wheel..so when you have it roll around in a situation like that it doesn't feel round. I've mad several cars in my like which were the same way.
Most modern cars have steering wheels that either aren't round or are off-center to the hub. When you do a u-turn and let the wheel spin when you straighten out, it's particularly obvious.
It was much more obvious in my '05 Cadillac STS, but most wheels do not have perfectly-centered hubs, as said above, and yes, it can make it appear the wheel isn't round.
They're almost always offset so that the wheel's center is...um...higher than where it's attached to the steering column.
Off center from hub. I notice that too on our RX, ES and G37.
Thank you for the replies, everyone. This is the first time I've experienced the off-center hub and so the feeling is very foreign to me. Perhaps all of our other cars are just too old (10+ years) for us to be aware of the newer trends. Thanks again, all!
The steering wheel is not round for two reasons: To give more thigh clearance, and to give a fuller view of the instruments.
I could be mistaken but I think the steering wheel is round.
I suspect it is mounted off centrally to the hub for leg clearance and fuller view of dash panel as you stated..
