Hello all, few ls problems recently but trying to keep her running... my cats are not working at 100% I used cataclean and it helps delay the problem, and makes the engine light go away so it’s mentally not bothering me anymore (po420) *i think* I’m not sure what to replace or buy.... the autozone guy said “it’s the one on the right side of the car” but what that isn’t enough info for me and they couldn’t explain. If anyone could provide a link of what to buy that would be appreciated. (Hope this makes sense first post on a forum)

If converter was clogged, and cataclean opened it up,why do you want to replace it? Are there other drivability issues related to cat,or are you just the kind of guy who wants everything 100% and nothing else? Which is fine,Im just curious. Me,I’d be jumping up and down and giving sacrifices to the Catalytic Converter God.In fact I'd be willing to sacrifice the neighbors 2 mindless ankle biter yappers if you’d like.

your cats are prob fine unless your car was running like ****, then it is possible they could be bad.
But usually when I've had P0420 & P0430 codes they come and go. I've cleared the code and it might come back sometimes, it may not.
What I've done to get rid of them is:
-clean air mix path/throttle body
-check/replace downstream o2 sensors
-possibly replace upstream as well?
-hit wide open throttle , supposed to help "clean" the cats
*unplug battery for 15 min after replacing anything

It opens up for a little bit but the codes come back immediately almost, you can feel the difference after a few days of cataclean and it wears off. It doesn’t have to be 100% I just hate seeing dash lights!!! :/ and as for the other user I have disconnected the battery multiple times

Personally, I would recommend taking your car to a good exhaust shop. Our cars can have issues with exhaust leaks at a few locations. Get the Y-pipe checked for cracks and check the inlet and outlet flange gaskets to each cat for leaks.

Many possibilities though mostly air-fuel related going upstream of the cats. Engine coolant temp sensor, thermostat, both O2 banks and checking for lost vacuum through cracked vacuum lines. MAF sensor check as well. Good to check the exhaust pre-cats as Leeroy mentions.

.....Neighborhood kids are pretty awesome actually. My new theme song when I’m working on my 1998 LS400.Music is always good when doing car work.
