I’m posting here for quicker response. The 2010-17 LS460 Sport/Fsport shares the same Direct Shift 8 speed with other F model cars. Having this transmission really separates it from all other LS’s. With full cat back and deleted secondary’s the 1-2 shift and any rev matching downshifts sound awesome..
I often drive aggressively in M mode and experienced the Downshift warning buzzer for the first time when attempting to shift from 3rd to 2nd gear. It beeped twice and would not engage in 2nd. The revs were around 4000rpm when I tried so nothing abnormal. I redline daily for this to happen now after 18 months is concerning. In the last few thousand miles I had 2 drain/fill trans fluid changes (oil was a bit dirty first time), could this be related? I didn’t have trans temp warning light on either. I disengaged from M back to normal and it was fine after.

I'm no pro when it comes to the F and its capabilities/limitations, but in my experience when you are trying to downshift and the car beeps, your RPM's are too high for this to happen. lay off the gas and slow it down, and the car always shifts when it finds it's happy place.
Not exactly sure - but I agree, you were too high in the rev range to drop from 3-2.
I have noticed that the ratio difference between 2-3 is more significant then between the higher gears. Always felt that 3rd should have been a bit shorter to line up with 2nd better.
Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that it wouldn’t drop into 2nd even after I slowed right down. It was stuck in 3rd. I actually recall that RPMs were 3500 not 4000 when I made that first attempt so it have have dropped in. Redline is 6600 on the 1UR and also the same 2.937 Final Drive.

At what point did it eventually shift down to 2nd? And was the car fully warmed up?
I tried about 3-4 times and my speed dropped to about 20mph. I pulled over and shifted out of M and back. Then I paddled thru the gears again in M and all was fine. I was about 30 mins into driving. I understand the tendencies when the car is cold.
Too bad you messed with the fluid. The level is wrong now and needs to be corrected. Low fluid level is the first thing to check with these gearboxes.
I sent mine for analysis twice, and even at 120k miles with a fair number of track weekends the fluid was still in good shape. I only changed it at 150k because I wanted to put in a new filter and had to drop the pan.
When the level is set correctly, these problems disappear.
FWIW, do NOT follow the level setting instructions for your model. The procedure is a little different for your car as it is for the GS F I also have in the garage.
You used the sequential shift instead of the direct paddle shifters? I thought there was a difference throwing the car into "M" sequential shift vs using the paddles. Paddles will let you redline all day won't it?
