Headlight issue thread
#76
ok, i just got my car back from the shop & this problem still won't go away. I bought an HID kit with new ballasts since I was told my ballasts didn't work. I didn't go thru the dealer because the ballasts are part of the headlight & the whole headlight assembly would have to be purchased & installed. I didn't feel like being raped for $1200 so I looked for an alternate solution (see earlier in this thread).
I finally found a compatible kit & had it installed. The lights finally turned on without any problem & I was ecstatic. Fast forward 3 hours & the sun goes down. I stopped @ a red light & saw my headlight's reflection on the car in front of me. The passenger side light was out. Again, flicking the light off/on fixed it. The bulbs I purchased were part of the kit. I'm seriously gonna have to dropkick this car if this keeps happening...

have an 08 gs350
started up the car today and noticed the headlight reflection off the garage wall was off.....the driver side was bright white but the passenger side was purplish
i went out to inspect and about a minute later the passenger side headlight goes off
will call keyes lexus and lexus of glendale tomorrow and see what they say
hoping its only a bulb issue
anyone know if its still under warranty? also my key fob died last week....hoping its only a battery issue.....anyone else with this problem and how much to get a new battery for the fob?
thanks!

I bought an 08 GS350 less than a month ago and experienced the headlight issue 3 weeks after purchase. The passenger bulb would glow purplish for a while and then turn off. I panicked for a second but then quickly tracked down this thread and felt better!
First, swap the bulbs to confirm that it's just the bulb and not the ballast. This will most likely be the case. Here are a few tips for removing/installing the bulbs:
1) Remove the air intake completely to get to the passenger side bulb, it's 3 screws total and takes less than 3 min (you can also clean the filter while you are at it). This will give you plenty of room to work with and you don't have to worry about accidentally dropping the bulb or touching the glass part with your hands.
2) For driver side, unscrew the windshield fluid hose and tuck it away to make more room.
3) It's not necessary to be in ACCESSORY mode to test the lights (I accidentally activated accessory mode with the air intake attachment disconnected which resulted in the check engine light turning on with message "VSC". The check engine light reset after completing 3 power on/off cycles so it's no big deal).
The bad bulb showed the same symptoms under the driver side ballast so I decided to get new bulbs..ordered 6000K Garax D4S D4R HID from MotoringMax on eBay ($90). I upgraded to the $5 shipping and had the bulbs in 2.5 days (shipped from CA to FL).
I'm actually glad that this happened now because I like the 6000K's much better than the stock 4300K's...see pic.

I was having the same issues as stated in this thread and ended up being my ballast that was going out. Did not want to shell out the $1400 for a headlight just because of the ballast so I ended up retrofitting an after market HID kit. Dont have pics of the process on the GS but last year I did a write up on when I did it on an IS350 so hope it helps..
