This was a device I installed in my IS350, which added Android Auto/Apple CarPlay capabilities and made my infotainment system actually useful:

I spent nearly $500 on it, and it was worth every penny. If I had any other vehicle, and it didn't have AA, I would willingly spend this money and go through the time and effort to install it. But if it costed $1, I wouldn't install it in my Tesla, because I would be wasting $1 on something I don't need, and would never use. If you poll most Tesla owners, I would predict that most would agree with me

haha, tesla is pretty closed.

exactly, and tesla relented and put round steering wheels back in their vehicles, lol.

I don’t want to have to spend money and install janky aftermarket stuff to make my car like a regular car.
you drive a car with a spaceship interior. not so regular.

Another example of a control interface that disqualifies a car for me is push button gear selectors. Can’t stand them.
gv60 my gf just got doesn't have buttons but it sure is wild.

glowing orb until you 'start' the car, then a rotary dial for gears (R, N, D).

back to teslas and carplay, like many things we discuss like turn signal buttons vs stalk, you can and will get used to the way tesla does things.

tesla doesn't offer carplay because it doesn't want apple software on their cars.

i use CP in both my hyundai and lexus. i like having siri, i like doing messages on it, apple maps, youtube music, etc.

I don’t need CP. I just prefer and want it just like a lot of stuff we have we just want.
exactly, it's not about need.

i agree with this, tesla should offer it, even if people end up not using it once they get going with the tesla ui, it's just removing an objection.

well i've used it quite a bit. it's fine (if overly busy). i still want CP.

Like I said, never say never. Who knows, maybe I'll have an iPhone one day.

Tesla has recently completely redone their UI a few updates ago and made it much more user friendly. So much so, my technophobe wife can easily use it. I'm totally neutral when it comes to Tesla putting in AA or ACP. If they do it, more power to them, but I would never use it if they did. But they are not going to because like you said, their UI is a closed ecosystem

Ain't no such thing as perfect...

But thats a great example. There are other apps too, the ability to use multiple mapping platforms, I have a police scanner app I like in traffic etc, I use the NPR app, SpotHero for parking...

Its got turn signal stalks and a gearshift lol. At least thats regular!

I actually don't mind the rotary dial, much prefer it to buttons.

I'm just curious what people would be using from AA or CarPlay that Tesla already doesn't have built in? These are just some of the apps:

And their Navigation is top notch, not only being traffic aware, but weather and road condition aware to the point it will give you your exact arrival time and SoC

But I think even if Tesla offered AA and CP, there would still be complaints

The "messaging" built into Tesla basically integrates with the messaging app on your phone. Tesla's phone app integrates with your phone app. Apple Maps and Waze are useless when going on trips because they won't plan supercharger stops for you. All notifications from my phone show up on the screen. NPR...Tesla has that. Radio stations? It has that. The built in Tesla maps even show you current weather.

But look, I'm not going to tell you what you should or should not use. If Tesla's lack of ACP is deal breaker, so be it

I don't have an EV...so I don't care about planning Supercharger stops. I like to be able to use multiple GPS mapping options, so I can pull up Waze and see what its saying while still using another service for my main mapping.

Scanner Radio, thats police scanners. Tesla has that? Its not radio stations. How about Spot Hero? I can reserve and pay for parking through CarPlay. Weatherology reads weather forecasts for your current location.

I'm sure I would be fine with just Tesla's interface but I want Apple CarPlay...

Were talking about specifically Tesla, which is an EV and requires a proper trip planner.

Do people actually use those apps in their cars? Look, again I'm not telling you what you should use or not use. you've made it clear that you absolutely need ACP, and I respect that

ABRP sets your stops, and you can use the Tesla's navigation and also check in with Waze and see what traffic is doing and decide which one to listen to. You also aren't always traveling on a trip when using navigation and don't always have to plan your charging stops.

If people didn't use the apps they wouldn't exist. Sure, people use them. I don't need ACP, but I want it. It really should be an option.

Apple Maps does work with EVs, will factor in SoC, route impacts like elevation and efficiency, and lets you choose preferred networks for charging stops. ABRP does too, and can also access real-time SoC, efficiency and so on. Tesla obviously has this all set up already, but other mapping apps do it too.

You can actually use Apple maps on Tesla, you would have to share it with the Tesla App and give it permission:

Remote navigation
Use the "share" feature on your iPhone or Android device to start navigation remotely. You'll need to allow access to the Tesla mobile app first

question - one thing i rely on carplay for is that it already knows my contacts. so if i say (voice) navigate to john smith's house it will get the address from my contact.
how can i do that with the tesla ui?
