as for current s owners feeling 'betrayed' it wasn't a more extensive re-design, that makes no sense to me... i would have thought existing owners would be thrilled it's still largely the same looks so their own cars aren't 'obsolete'. but some people just have to be butt hurt no matter what.
i don't care for the yoke and lack of controls, i think there's some usability issues there, but still... amazing car.
I disagree. I think they are pursuing minimalism to the nth degree so removing the stalks is just a design decision. Adding capacitive ability on the steering wheels and beneath the wireless charging ports for gear selecting is probably more expensive than having the stalks.
Minimalism is just the marketing tag....Toyota is doing to...but they are doing it in different ways...for example...no more cruise control stalks on TNGA products...now on the steering wheel ...These moves are to save money....Tesla is smart to save money by moving so much to software....no more rain wiper stalk or switch...to you move it to the screen...just like HVAC controls...no more buttons...all software...Toyota did it with their new NX... I think the Toyota BZ with the yoke is absent the lane change stalk as well

The stalks are extremely cheap to implement though. Capacitive buttons that run along the wireless charger are probably more expensive. Overall, I agree that removing physical objects saves money in the long run but this particular decision seems more of a design philosophy decision vs cost cutting. I prefer stalks personally for signals. Capacitive buttons for gear selector is fine with me.

That is the trick. It is nice design and I really like it, this new design is to save money but you get more features etc... However, the previous interior had more parts...more connections etc and was more complicated. Designing both LHD/RHD is easier and less complex with new design. The Tesla 3 is even easier if you look at the parts on the dash. The new Toyota Corolla went this design method..they all copy each other somehow someway. It is interesting to watch what Tesla is doing.
I'm not attacking Tesla
Another brilliant cost saving move was to put the automatic steering wheel button into the steering wheel instead of the shaft. My 04 4Runner has to separate levers for the tilt (made of metal and embossed with tilt and a plastic tip) and telescoping steering....two totally different places...my 21 4R has just one that serves a dual purpose.

I would crash my car with a wheel like that no matter what it was, Tesla, Lexus, Chevy! I'd be driving in some mall parking lots for weeks on end trying to get used to it. That is simply unsafe.
Put a HALF of a steering wheel in a car that runs 155MPH in the quarter mile? Gonna be lots of dead people.
Seeing the auto forward/reverse feature in action that is neat as heck.
......if someone is in front and back of the car it won't decide and makes you do it.
Meh it only works half the time it will take getting used to or turn it off completely, accident waiting to happen. It only works when the car pulls into a spot where camera sees object in the front. It doesn’t work for 3-point turns pretty much a gimmick to me.
Regardless of the yoke I wonder how many people will wreck these things. It’s not like controlling a 9 second car when accelerating is easy. People that haven’t driven or aren’t used to the quickness of a 9 second car, me included, could be a recipe for disaster.
one question i noticed is that the new S no longer has the dual brake calipers in the rear? (i think one was used for the parking brake).
It sure seems that way from the pics.

I get it - the owners who have had the previous gen for say 4 or 5 years and want a new one, feel that they want a different looking car now. I've had mine for 2 years only, so I think that's why I don't feel getting the new that looks similar to mine is big deal.
