Totally agree - for what it's worth, I don't think it can be considered as "recognized revenue" either way because it's refundable. It's more to show a pipeline of anticipated revenue - I think I remember reading the Model 3 conversion rate (people who put down a pre-order deposit that ended up purchasing) was around 80%.

It at least demonstrates real interest in the truck going against all the expectations from the "experts" and analysts in the industry that were shocked and immediately thought it a failure before the intro was over.

I guarantee you Tesla won't be able to meet demand whatever it turns out to be because it will exceed all expectations. That's not a failure. Meanwhile, Ford, GM, and Ram continually offer massive incentives to buy their trucks. Who's the winner here?

Problem with truck is that it is not functional, and it is a truck. So hard to get into, hard to get stuff into it too due to those huge sides.

Sure, it is cheaper to build it this way and then everyone applauds Tesla for disregarding functionality and cheapening their production process.

It depends on what function. Yes, if loading over the side is the most important thing to you, this isn't your truck. I would say most people load through the tailgate. With a built in load ramp, I would say the CybrTrck is more functional because you can walk in your cargo to the bed. Doesn't look any harder to get into than a typical full size. Cab appears to be roomiest in class.

I think people are assuming it can't be functional due to the look but the reality is that there's not much compromise. Level side rails is really it.

From my understanding this piece doesn't have the frame at all instead it's the body that holds it all together. What a odd choice for a vehicle that is expected to carry loads and go through tough explorations cause so far concept of structural steel doesn't have a good record of longevity.

I've seen Musk's SpaceX rockets land on a floating pod in the ocean while standing on the beach at 3am. The rockets he's building for Mars are built out of the same type of steel used in the truck. I will give his engineering brain the benefit of the doubt in building a pickup truck.

One question no one has seemingly brought up (and I myself didn't think of it until now) is why the Cybertruck is not being introduced at the L.A. Auto show, which is still going on, right now, as I speak? The L.A. Auto Show is enormous, and it would probably be presented to a lot more potential viewers.

Here's Doug Demuro's take on it. I'm more of a fan of Alex Dykes than I am of Doug, but I know some of you like him.

Enjoy.

I can't even watch him anymore he annoys me so badly. He did a review on one of my all time favorite cars, the 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow Edition and I didn't even watch that.

I think there were a lot more potential viewers already streaming the live reveal. Apple skipped Mobile World Conference and chose to hold its own events and present to a captivated audience in attendance and online. Everyone else copied the approach and here we are. It is also a safer bet to present a product in front of rabid fans instead of something like a car show with potential haters and hecklers.

It’s not being unveiled at a car show because that’s not what he does. It’s not what he does because that’s what everybody else does.

Why do it at a car show when you can pull off an event like that all on your own?

for several reasons.

1) why have the distraction of loads of other brands at your own introduction?
2) why pay a ton of money to launch it at an inflated cost location?
3) auto shows don’t matter in terms of numbers of ‘viewers’ because the big numbers are the streamers online (millions and billions)
4) they get to control the message better
