EPA Chief: Auto Start/Stop Technology Is Done
I hated it before 48v but it really is a non issue with the 48v system. It’s honestly really nice sitting at a light with no engine running. Same thing as a hybrid.
No, its a feature that has improved a lot. Anyways in a Mercedes its very easy to code it off.
Its the constant stopping and starting of the stop and go traffic that makes it annoying, regular driving its really no issue.
Agreed.
Pretty sure in Sport mode it wont do it on the BMW...

I have my S580 coded to start in individual which I had set as everything comfort but sport engine. I have recently been driving it in all comfort and kind of like it better.
In sport on the Mercedes it doesn’t shut the engine off until you are stopped and have been for a couple seconds, vs comfort where it turns it off before you come to a stop. It’s even less noticeable in comfort. In Eco mode it will kill the engine at speed when there isn’t much load. I may try that some tomorrow on my way to WV and see if it will coast down all the highway grades.
As an example of how I kinda like the start stop with the 48v system, I had it coded and told him not to code it off.

My 2025 Cayenne and Tucson stop/start implementation is horrible and when it’s hot the a/c doesn’t blow cold air when the engine shuts off. My BMW even without the mild hybrid in two different cars weren’t noticeable so I never turned it off. I turn it off every single time I drive the Cayenne or Tucson, every time...

Uhh, no.

Not that I ever leave it on long enough, lol. I'm finally used to hitting the button every drive, but I get also why you coded your last one. It's annoying to turn off every time regardless.
But they would not have agreed to it if it made starter failure substantially more likely because it would increase warranty claims.
agreed, it’s not about any one of us, it’s about all of us - a point I made upthread.
For illustrative context, per the most recent consumption data the US consumed just over 137 billion gallons of gasoline in 2023. If the consumers of that gasoline had collectively been 5% more efficient the potential savings would have been just under 7 billion gallons. Obviously a lot more nuanced than that, but it illustrates the point that a little at the individual level amounts to a lot in the aggregate.

Others drive and fly all over the world and use more gas than all of us. lol
I’m at Disney and my rental is a Subaru Outback. I defeat stop/start right away. It’s so hot and humid that once I’m stopped for even 30 seconds the a/c blows warm air since our trips are so short and the car isn’t cool. It’s very noticeable and not good for Florida weather.
I know geko mentioned his M3 has auto stop/start which really surprised me because it's stick. I think he said it's actually quite smooth.
I think if I ever had a vehicle with this tech, it would have to 48v mild hybrid setup.
