EPA Chief: Auto Start/Stop Technology Is Done
There was once a time where some admitted to gaming the auto start stop. What would happen is they would come to a stop sign, and they would roll stop it so they didn’t have to deal with the start stop. Sadly, some vehicle vehicles you could not defeat it.
What does "so we're fixing it" actually mean? Are they prohibiting it (revoking the approval)? As I understand it, there are no current mandates that require it. I don't quite get it...
Edit: In reading other reports, it looks like they'll remove the ability to get carbon credits from implementing it.

Lol wait, I thought so many people cared so much about fuel economy (not directed toward anyone, just in general) and that the government would :never: take something like this away??? Isn't fuel economy apparently so important? 5% is 5%.
Oh that's right...

And the government does not mandate ESS systems anyways.
That's why I don't think it will come back. I wonder if I can code the Yukon, I still sometimes don't catch myself turning it off until it starts and stops... At least your defeat button is right by the start button so it's much easier to not overlook.
The point is manufacturers may not actually remove it, because they added it without being forced to in the first place.
I'm sure there is a way to defeat it. Honestly I leave mine on now because with the 48v system I don't even notice it

Yeah but if you could ditch start/stop, you would. Who wouldn't? I can't believe it's not defeatable on the 7 series.
I could have ditched start stop when I had my car coded and I didn't since it doesn't bother me. Coded it off on the S560 and on the gas Pacificas.
With the 48v system you really don't even notice.

Our 2018 Audi can occasionally be annoying in bad traffic where you creep a few feet at a time, or when the restart catches the wipers mid-swipe. But otherwise its fine, and we leave it enabled 99% of the time. I'm sure the newer ones are even better.
The M3's system is literally perfect. It only shuts off the engine at a stop, in neutral, with the clutch out. I have tried to race the starter, and I lose every time. I cannot physically get it into first gear before the engine is ready to go. AND it remembers your last setting, so if you don't want it, you never have to deal with it.
