Angry Need a Shock Absorber - Rear -

This past week i was lowering my car and once it was all done my rear strut bottom out. i have a 06 lexus GS430 with AVS suspension (Sport or Normal switch) . Many members have changed their suspension to coilovers and i wanted to know if anyone still has their factory shock / struts and is willing to sell them for a resonable price. this is a project i wanted to do myself and i wasnt looking on spending $900- $2000 on coilovers yet.

I suspect the OP means he's blown a shock after bottoming out, esp if he shortened the bump stop which one thread here recommended!

rear shock blown out after driving it for aruond 15 miles after lowering it. i wanted a more agressive drop and went with Megan lowering springs. i supposed the drop was too much and the shocks have around 95k miles on it so they gave up on me.

so im looking for a used rear shock to replace this problem for the time being.

depending on how low you go with springs, you want to cut the bump stop to allow for additional travel.

well if you didnt cut the bump stop (that was kinda my thinking when i asked what you meant by bottoming out) that could be what your feeling. not cutting the bump stop doesnt allow the shock to travel as much. a good way to test if it is blown for sure is press down on that corner on the car and see how it rebounds. if it comes right back up then the shock is still good.

i doubt that its any good.. i remember hearing a noise like if the gas or oil had come out.. almost as if air was leaking out for a few seconds.. the next day i realized that the car was way lower from that side( driver side) than opposite side and thats when i was sure it wsnt any good anymore. I put back the factory springs so it wouldnt look so bad but still in search for a another shock.

There like 350$ a pop new I believe. Somewhere around that. I was going to buy new ones with df's until it was going to cost as much as coilovers. Good luck.

I don't advocate cutting the bump stop for extra travel - the whole point of it is to prevent excessive compression of the shock, so as it won't be damaged.

Shocks can be rebuilt - no idea how much you'd save, whether they'd do just one rather than the pair, or if anyone worthy is local to you.
yea it does prevent excessive compression but at the same time your not bottoming out on your bump stop on every little bump.

im not sure if you can rebuild an oem strut. i know coilovers it very common but never heard about it being done on oem ones

True, but in this instance it sounds like the OP hit a major bump which put more energy into what that one shock was able to deal with.
