Default Nav version and bypass the lock whilst driving

Hi,

I would like to know how from the nav unit (rather than the disc) what version of maps, firmware, etc the nav unit is using, so I can be sure that it is updated.

Also - I've seen and read a lot about bypassing the lock on using the nav destination whilst driving. Some say it's possible - others not - others say that you can install a device, etc, etc. What is it? Does it matter which nav unit you have, which disc you are using, etc?

Thanks.

Press the MENU button and then, in the upper right hand corner of the screen, the DVD button. It will provide you with the map version.

With earlier versions of the NAV software, you can disable the data lockout, while stopped, by pressing a series of area of the screen. If you search in the forum, you will find the sequence and applicable model years. Note that after you turn the ignition off, the lockout is re-established for the next time you start the car.

Beatsonic sells a "kit" which is a Y-connector and a switch whereby you can disable the NAV lockout wile you are in motion and enter data. Note that while the NAV lockout is disabled you are no longer receiving accurate positioning info and so you must re-enable the lockout to get directions after you have inputted the data. Also, it takes anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes for the car to figure out where it is and accurately place itself on the map. VVTiBob posted an nice install PDF at this link.

For the do-it-yourself types, the BeatSonic just interrupts a single wire coming off of the NAV. If you don't mind cutting your factory harness, you could get a $2 SPST switch from Radio Shack and save yourself $178.

The value of the BeatSonic is in the one-foot male-to-female harness so that the wire is interrupted there rather than on your factory harness. That's the only part we used in the install for my car. The switch they supplied (while a perfectly fine switch) was tossed in the trash.

The BeatSonic DOES NOT OVERRIDE the phone lockout when moving, just the NAV. To disable the phone lockout, you must interrupt pin #18 on the connector, again with a SPST switch. I used an foot switch from an old Dodge Dart (remember when the high beams were controlled with a foot switch?). That let the switch be hidden out of the way, yet easily used with both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The trilogy of overrides is the Vais iPod integration which takes care of the I AGREE nag screen, but that's a different question.

Finally, this reply is for informational purposes only. It's dangerous to input data while moving, I only use my overrides on a closed test track with a professional driver. Yada, yada, yada.

Must be nice! We seem to have gone the other way here in the States: Locked down with no override.

Sorry - not sure if that was a question or a statement ;-) If a question - this is the disc I bought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Toyota...vip=true&rt=nc

and yes I am in the UK, and yes it did mean that I can now update the address, postcode, street, etc whilst moving.

I checked and the ebay offering is for a Gen3 system - mine is a Gen1 so it won't work.

Shame really - could have done with postcode entry as its not got it.

Hi leigh

Good to see another Brit on here.

Has your Satnav been changed to a later Gen, can't see how a Gen 3 disc will work in the original Satnav which would have been a Gen I in a 2002, as ser67 said???

Where abouts are you in the UK?

Best regards
Steve

Hi Mrblister

Looks like I messed up, I confused ser67's post with leigh's and it is ser67 who has a 2002 like me.
Sorry for the confusion, I should read things a little more carefully.......

Best regards
Steve
