Default Yet another cracked windshield

My second SC430 and my second cracked windshield. I was away for a couple of days and my SC was in the garage, this morning I get in the car to notice a nice east to west crack midway up the windshield. I know a common problem but a PITA anyway. Lucky to be off this week and JN Phillips glass can take it tomorrow. Must be some strain on the design of the car. I know others have been through it but I just thought I would vent.
New sneakers and a new windshield tomorrow then a nice long 4th.

Default Cracked windshield, how often? Share experience please.

Sounds like cracked windshield is a common occurrence for all years of SC430

Can all of you who had cracked windshield on your SC430 shared your experiences?

How it happened?
How many times it happened to your car?
How often it happens?
How long you had your car and the mileage you put on it?
The model year of your car?
Price of the windshield? Both OEM and aftermarket.
Anything you learned from your experience to make the windshield less likely to crack again?

Thanks in advance

Thank you rominl.

How long did you owned the car and the mileage you put on it, if you don't mind sharing.

BTW, I am 100% agreed with your quote:

"If you can't afford it, drive the car stock. Putting on knock-offs is shameful on a car enthusiast site"

Especially true on a nice decent car, I guess if it is a base model Civic with hubcaps, some knock-offs alloy wheels would consider as an upgrade. But I am with you, I rather drive on the stock hubcaps.

i can't remember exactly, we leased the car in nov 04, and i think that probably happened in summer 2006, so i say maybe around 20k miles. it was stress crack coz' nothing in the morning when parked, and big *** crack in the evening when pick up the car

when dealership did the warranty, they did say from time to time they see cars with similar issues

yup, that's my mentality. some people call me harsh or cocky, but what do i care

How it happened?
It happened on the way from San Francisco to Vancouver. I got off the freeway and drove into the parking lot of a Wendy,
heard a loud 'bang', and then saw the 6 inches crack.
How many times it happened to your car?
Once, so far (knock on wood).
How long you had your car and the mileage you put on it?
I bought my 2006 SC brand new. Got the crack after 15 months and 7,000 miles.
Price of the windshield? Both OEM and aftermarket.
Dealership agreed it was a stress crack, so covered under warranty, would have charged around $1,600 otherwise.
Anything you learned from your experience to make the windshield less likely to crack again?
Keep my fingers crossed I wonder if the RFs + uneven surfaces like pot holes have something to do with weakening the windshield.

Though windshield stress cracks have occurred they do not appear to be a common occurrence. There have been a few instances here but that is about it with no seemingly related reasons to why it occurred. One member just came to his car while parked and it was cracked with no sign of external force causing it.

I can say that adding a front STB does reduce the roof cracking substantially on this car so perhaps it would also assist in preventing the windshield from flexing.

I did crack my windshield and the lesson there is when I see a large rock coming my way-swerve.

I don't know the details of it but, before I owned my car, the previous owner had the windshield replaced due to a stress crack.

I was told this by the dealer when they were servicing my car for a leak in the windshield. I didn't even know it was not the original windshield until they looked up the service history and told me about that.

Do I have to look forward to a cracked front glass? How to avoid? How much did it cost you? Martin

JTMAV, sorry to see of your troubles on the windshield, I merged your thread with this one to keep the subject in line for everyone's benefit. This way we can keep track of this issue.

Didn't mean to start something here, just thought it a bit coincidental that 2 SC 430's and 2 cracked windshields. The replacement is top notch(OEM) and it's nothing more than a nuisance. Given some of the pain my euro sedans have caused over the years this is nothing. Certainly not worthy of a long thread.
Happy 4th to all of you!

This is why we are here, to share our experiences, both good and bad. Perhaps this is larger issue than what I had thought. Thanks for posting.

Ad mine to the list. Same ingredients. Hot sunny day. Maybe is coincidental but that day they where testing the sprinklers at my office parking lot. Cold water on hot glass not a good idea usually. Windshield cracked from botom driver side creeping to the left. $450

I too experienced a cracked windshield. Wife came home from work and parked in the garage as normal. I walked by the car and noticed the crack. She said she hadn't noticed it. So we have no idea when it occurred. Not sure what caused it either. Called Lexus and they replaced it under warranty the next day. They called it a stress crack and said it was something they had seen before, but not on a regular basis. They did a test to see if there was any indication that the windshield could have been hit with something (a rock maybe) prior to approving the repair. This occurred in maybe Jan/Feb of this year. Not exactly sure. But I responded on the first round of posts on this subject. No problems since replacement.
