I'm no expert, but I bet an aftermarket unit is FAR easier to deal with than installing the OEM nav... the portable units work really well, and they're cheap. Also, does your windshield have the nav antenna running through the center of it? If not, you'd probably need to deal with that, too...

i didnt think about that.
a good aftermarket touchscreen double din with ipod inputs
should do me good now that i think about it.
few prior threads, with people having issues with the lex navi
and software updates etc. so i guess thats another good reason
to go aftermarket. any other suggestions are welcome..

Go with aftermarket. There is such a difference in the electronics and functionality. In '02 car makers weren't thinking about the Stereo/Navi as a full blown entertainment center like they are now. I bet you can buy top-end equipment and have it professionally installed for what you can buy the Lexus parts for.

We own an '02 and love the stereo but I would like more functionality. However the WAF (wife acceptance factor) would be a huge risk since she loves the simplicity of the current setup. Guess I have to wait to get my own SC.

Just get an aftermarket double din with nav/ipod/dvd etc. I was on the same boat and went this route. This would also be a good time to upgrade your speakers as you will more than likely be upgrading your stock amp.

The wiring should all be there. Plug and play though the parts may be prohibitive. Aftermarket is most likely a less expensive route.
