Default Windshield cracked, what do I do?

Hello, I found out my windshield cracked. My dad and sister drove it once since I last drove the car without the crack on my windshield. If they had a rock or anything hit it, they would have told me. I was taking out the car on last Saturday and found the crack. What should I do?

Do you have glass coverage on your insurance? Do that. It has to be replaced.

Depending on how big the crack is, it might be able to be fixed, but be ready to replace. I just replaced mine recently.

Get a new windshield. It sucks but it happens. Hopefully you have windshield coverage. If not you should look into getting it added on first. I have free windshield replacements with my plan.

If you don't have glass coverage on your insurance plan, find out what your comprehensive deductible is. I recently had to replace mine and I don't have glass coverage, but my comprehensive deductible is only $250.00, so I made a claim and State Farm replaced it with OEM glass. Comprehensive claims don't affect your insurance rates like collision claims. If your deductible is anything above $250.00, or your insurance company refuses to replace with OEM glass, it might be best to find a reputable shop that uses high quality non-OEM glass. At least part of the decision will come down to how particular you are about things depending on your available options.

a new windshield from a third party vendor should only cost $250. that's what mine cost. used a local guy instead of the dealer. don't call your insurance. they'll count it as a claim whether you use them or not.

did you have to get it "recalibrated" because of the rain sensor?

If you have the rain sensor or radar cruise, you will need to get it recalibrated. Just had this done a few months back, but I went with OEM glass.

Are you happy with the quality of the replacement glass? I have a big rock chip star on the passenger side right in the line of site (of course) and it's been fixed with the resin stuff, but it's still quite visible. I am considering replacing it soon.

My car is down in my garage but IIRC Pilkington makes the windshields for Lexus. Pilkington also made my BMW F30 328i windshield. I got a crack right above the speedometer and had to get it replaced. BMW wanted $2,500 for an OEM windshield with a rain sensor and head-up display but my insurance would only cover an aftermarket windshield. I decided to go with aftermarket Pilkington instead of OEM BMW Pilkington and it looked great and didn't;t chip any easier than OEM. The aftermarket glass actually had less waviness than the OEM one did but I'm sure that was just luck. The head-up display wasn't distorted or ghosting at all. I believe the aftermarket Pilkington was about half the price of OEM BMW co-branded Pilkington so I'd definitely recommend it if needed.

Cool, thanks. I also don't have rain sensors, which simplifies things a little. I put a new windshield in my 1GS years ago and the tint guy commented that it was cheap, Chinese glass, but it was crystal clear and did not have any ares where the view was distorted, so I was happy with that. I will probably do a new windshield soon. That big star on the right side bothers me.
