Ive looked over the forum for a couple hours now and havent found any conclusive information about this mod.
Will this modification effect my car in a bad way (Mess up the air/fuel ratio, Not get enough fuel under hard acceleration, etc.)? Any advice would be helpful. Im on a budget and have heard the EGR system is a common thing to fail on these cars and would like to eliminate this problem if possible, make the car easier to work on, and make it runner cleaner and cooler.

There is a big debate on this subject. I would do it for the same reasons as you mentioned, but the last time this debate was on I decided it wasnt worth it in the long run. Also you have to makeshift a resistor in the wiring.

 

Why was it not worth it for you? and im not a senior mechanic by any stretch so im just trying to figure out if it will cause problems.

Not really maybe it could alter you fuel trims a tiny bit but I would think the ecu will learn around that so really nothing to worry about and if I was keeping my v-8 I would do it my self.

 

I believe you wont pass smog if you did this mod, at least here in CA.

 

There's really no gains from deleting the egr. The egr is only working during cruising and it helps you get better gas mileage by sending burnt gases back into the engine. Those gases cannot be burnt again but they do take up space which normally would be filled with new fuel and air therefore saving you the fuel.

 

The down side to an egr system is the fact that it allows dirty exhaust gas back in to the intake which will turn everything black and full of carbon plus it makes the intake manifold warmer than it needs to be imo.
But if you are in Cali I would say do not mess with it.

I've had my egr system removed for over a year now. There is no downside to removing it, nothing will go wrong on with the car. As for California smog, I have know idea, nor do I care.

The egr system was just a stupid invention that came out of the 80's to help reduce emissions and make environmentalist happy. It does nothing but hurt the performance of the engine and is costly part to replace when it fails.
I removed the entire system on both my sc400 and my cousins sc300 using 1/8 inch thick pieces of aluminum and hi temp silicone red to seal the intake and exhaust and a 10 ohm resistor to tell the ecu that everything is a-okay.

 

If Lextreme had a plug in, in line resistor, I think it would sell better. I still think someone will post with opposite opinion. I admit I do like a clutter free engine bay and engine.

 

Thank you all for you responces. For right now I just fixed the problem on the EGR which was a vacuum modulator because this is my DD. But when I have another car as a DD and dont have to worry about driving it around all year, i will remove it. Hopefully installing a Procharger, but thats a ways away in future plans

 

To be clear, the correct resistor has always been included in the kit.

i have done also years ago a plate on the backside of the intake plenum and a resistor near the ECU to have s stock look. no problems over 8 years. my SC is a 97 with OBD2.
