Default Changing Calipers

Trying to change my calipers on my 92 SC 300. Only tried the front. Can't get the calipers off. What's the trick???

did you take the 2 bolts off?

need more details on whats going on/what have you already done?

Trick? You just remove the two bolts on the back and the caliper slides off.

OP, how about telling us exactly what you are stuck on/havng problems with?

If you dont know how to remove your calipers, you probably shouldn't even be touching your brakes, period.

if the rotors are worn badly, they will develop a lip that the pad won't slide over. you may need to spread the pads, pry them apart. if this is the case, you really need to get new or get your current rotors milled (and new pads, of course).
aside from that, calipers should be easy.

Yeah. I took the two bolts off. Its sliding it off thats a problem. Its this little center piece thats giving me a problem. I can't slide it off for nothing!

hit it with a hammer or crowbar or whatever you have...and itll come off.

I had to unbolt the two bolts from the caliper pins to separate the caliper from the bracket so I can remove the pads. And then unbolt the mounting bracket. My rotors were worn out and had that lip.

If that is your case, then you will need rotors as well.

Sorry guys! I meant rotors. I was extremely tired when I put this post up the other day. Got em off though. @ SH JZZ30, yeah man my rotors were rusted and stuck to the center. We banged them off. This was just the front though. Gotta do the back rotors Saturday. Anybody know what size socket I need for the center bolt on the rear rotors???

center bolt is actually the axle nut. shouldn't need to take it off to get the rotors off (unless toyota did something weird...).

I can chime in on this since I recently changed all of my rotors and pads. If your rotors are quite old like mine were, then spray some brake cleaner around the hub and center rear. MAKE SURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS NOT ENGAGED LOL...I REPEAT, MAKE SURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS NOT ENGAGED! Remove the caliper bolts just like you did on the front brakes. You do not ned to remove any center socket just like the fronts. Take a long flat head and pry your rotors off. Try not to damage the dust shield during this process. If it's not acting like an easy hooker, get a hammer and tap one side of the rotor, then rotate and tap another side. You should be able to remove them pretty easily now.

Inspect your parking brake pins and springs for any damage too. I recently had to reset mine when the pin/spring mechanism slipped out of place and gave an awesome rattling sound for a day.

Realistically, it should take about 2 hours to change all four rotors and pads. Please only use hand tools when removing and installing the caliper bolts. I don't know how many times I've had to kill myself when mechanics over torqued bolts with air tools or fighting over a stripped bolt.

Take your time and do it right the first time.
