I have searched around trying to do my research on how to replace the engine mounts. So far I was able to loosen and remove the top and lower nuts on each mount.

However, following some instructions it seems that it is also recommended to remove the two mount brackets that bolt to the engine. I am having trouble accessing these four bolts on each mount bracket. Secondly, does anything else need to be removed to get the old mount out and the new mount in.

On the Ls forums they are removing the sub-frame/crossmember to allow more room for removal. Is this necessary to remove and install the new engine mounts. Any tips would be great. I already had to order a new p.s hose from the reservoir to the pump.

 

You shouldn't have to unbolt the brackets. If you unbolt the rear mount under the transmission, and hoist the engine up a little bit, you should have enough room to access the mounts.

 

Hell the bottom is the easy part. It's the damn top you have to turn into a contortionist to get tight.

 

Also found that I'm gonna need a 14mm universal joint socket which was also stated by other members. I guess the only remaining question is once the mount bracket bolts are removed is it possible to just slide the mount bracket and old motor mount out or is there something else that is in the way that needs to be removed?

 

Since I am replacing the front suspension, I'm really trying to replace the engine mounts, too. I removed the rear Steel crossmember and am preparing to remove the Aluminum crossmember. It appears to me I nee about 2" of clearance to get out the old mounts.
Should I remove the Steering Rack?
Can I block the engine using the Crankshaft pulley?
The Shop Manual say to remove the 4 bolts mounting the bracket to the block.

put a jack under the trans mount, raise it up, then lift the engine more. No need to remove brackets nor cross member. Pull out old mount on passenger side first (easier) then put the new mount on same side top bolt in first and screw in nut a few threads, do not tighten yet. Line it up with the bottom hole and lower engine. Repeat with driver side, just need to lift the trans a bit more for this side.

 

can someone tell me if im correct after going through this thread...
1. unbolt top and bottom bolts holding mounts in place (2 bolts on each mount)
2. lift motor
3. remove/replace motor mount (preferably the passenger side first)
4. raise transmission mount for a bit more space.

one more thing, MR2toSC4 when you lift from the transmission mount do you mean the braket that bolts to the frame of the car and the motor mount?

 

If you lift or jack the motor you run the risk of ruining the psteer and ac lines.

No you must remove the radiator,fan, P/S reservoir and you can lift the engine w/o damaging the lines.
We did "MR2toSC4" car 2 weeks ago.

 

How do you remove the top nut on each mount? I cannot even turn them with a 17 mm wrench. They are torqued to 46 ft lb.
Would one of the new ratcheting box-end wrenches fit?
For me and my project of replacing all front control arms, I believe dropping the Aluminum Crossmember is best. I am going to unbolt the steering rack and let it down. Then, remove the engine mount bracket from the block.

 

Has anyone substituted high quality OE specified polyurethane mounts, and any brand preference?

Any benefit labor wise to doing the tranny mount while doing motor mounts?
