Default MAF sensor cleaning

Guys,

Has anyone tried cleaning the contacts or anything on their MAF sensor. Mine is going out and I really don't want to drop $150 on a used one.

Hsa anyone ever removed theirs and tried to clean it or fix it? If so let me know.

Thx,
Jonny

My mechanic used carb cleaner but he said that you have to be careful, just a light spray. Take it or leave it…

Hey Johnny,
How do you know that it's going out?
If the ECU giving you a code for MAF malfunction?
Is the MAF in stock location?

I've gotten the P0100 - MAF Malfunction code once when I forgot to hook the thing up and the P0101 - MAF Circuit Range/Performance when I connected the MAF directly to the throttle body (just messing around)
Check connections before you start spraying anything into the MAF.

Hey man,

Yeah, I am throwing a MAF code. It is in the stock location. Never been unpluuged or removed. The car runs perfectly, but then the CEL comes on for about 5 secs and the car bogs, then it goes off and car runs great again.

I will check and see how it looks.

Thx everyone for their input.

Peace,
Jonny

What you've described tells me it's either a loose connection, or another one of your infamous ground problems.
If the MAF needed cleaning it wouldn't change drastically in the way it performs.
Since you didn't specify which code, I'm assuming you're OBDI in which case your MAFsensor is actually a Karmenn Vortex AFM and I would really recommend against spraying anything in there.

Best of luck,
~Alan

Hey man,

I have gone through the car, as has my mechanic. We cannot find anymore grounds that are not connected.

Yeah, I have OBD1. I think it is code 31 I am getting.

On your advice I won't spray anything, but if you have any other ideas please let me know.

Thx for all your help,

peace,
Jonny

There are MAF testing tools out there.
Check out fleaBay # 2444622332
I don't know if that's the one to use, but there are similar products.
There's also a way to test it using a simple Multi-meter but the instructions are in the shop manual.
Maybe someone can scan that up for you.

Good luck.

Your mechanic might know how to test for a faulty MAF without a shop manual.
The MAF receives +5v and outputs between 0-5V depending on airflow going through it.
The clip on the MAF should have 3 wires coming to it.
Usually the middle one is the one going back to the ECU.

My idea of how the test would go:
Take the MAF off the car but keep the wires connected.
Turn ignition to ON (don't start the car)
Hook up a multimeter so that the negative lead in on the (-) battery terminal and the positive is tapped into the middle wire of the MAF.
Check the Multimeter for voltage. Should be around 1 Volt.
Now blow through the MAF in the direction specified on the MAF by an arrow.
The Voltage should go up slightly.

This is just my idea of the test and by no means should you take my word for it.
Check with your mechanic and if he doesn't know, rea dup in a shop manual.

Good luck,
~Alan

I'm not positive, but there may be another set of electrical conditions beyond the voltage readings.
I would try and find another willing SC owner in the area and trade the two units and see if you still get the code.
