Navigation Upgrade
if you do decide to pay to update, you may want to be confirm you get the 2017update expected to be released sometime this month. (mayve its out?)
Well, Toyota/Lexus are specifically called out for not having any current plans for Carplay or Android Auto even moving forward, but every other manufacturer is implementing. So they are definitely are the main manufacturers that are outliers and therefore rear of the pack of the adopters. While you mentioned Tesla, while they are cutting edge tech, it is ironic that they also are backwards and not adopting carplay or android auto either;
That's not surprising, considering avg age of Lexus buyer is 61.
I have a 2009 RX350 that still has the 2008 maps on it - yes, I'm lazy and cheap! Anyway, when I took it in to the dealer to have the faulty cracking dash replaced earlier this year, the nice man in the parts department just GAVE me the 2014 update cd. I haven't installed it yet, but have watched youtubes and appears all I have to do is access the unit, which is in the back of the car behind the "secret door" (woo hooooo), take the old disc out, put the new disc in and let it load. Easy peasy. Guess I will take care of this over the Thanksgiving week!

So when I get our 2014 NAV updated I should tell them I want the 2018 dated version? I thought it would be dated 2017 if released at the end of 2017. Please clarify. For over $300 I want the latest but not sure what to ask for. Thanks.
Safest way to approach is to ask for the latest software and ask when will the next release come out.
In TruTexan's case, the parts guy did him a favor, but the old software had very little commercial value.
For clarity on this subject the base hardware [your model/yr of vehicle] AND software [upgrade] BOTH play a part and are linked.Lexus also updates firmware at times. Analogy is computer hardware, firmware, operating system and software, all need to be considered in an upgrade, as the software has to use all the underlying structure.

Mine reads 17.1 ... [just got updated today]. I have not played with it much ,,, looks and feels the same. My saved locations and home were not lost.
Keep in mind the software (data) may have tp be matched with type of hardware the vehicle has. Technology has changed over time and the hardware has changed too. See my post #86 this thread.
Mine is 2011 450H.
