Default TPMS Sensor Question

The TPMS sensor batteries were finally dying in my 2010 RX. I took it to Walmart and had the sensors replaced. They assured me that the sensors were paired and all was good to go, said I just needed to drive it for 20 min to get the light to come off. Well, that was a week ago and every time I start the car the light blinks for about 5 min before remaining solid. I've tried repairing/resetting myself by holding the TPMS button during the ignition on sequence, but nothing happens. What am I missing, how do I fix this? Thanks!

My understanding is there is programming involved after installation. I would take the RX back.

Are you getting a message on the screen and is reporting communication error or something else?

The folks at Walmart are wrong and the sensors have to be paired with the car. I had this happen when I got new TPMS sensors at Costco. However, they said to drive around for 20 minutes and if the sensors did not pair to come back and they would pair them with their hand held device. Well, I had to return and it took them 5 minutes to pair them using the hand held device. The device scans each sensor and somehow pairs it with the car but I forget the technical details.
Walmart will be able to take care of this for when you return and complain and advise them that the folks on the Lexus forum told you that your vehicle requires them to be paired with the car in order to work and turn off the warning light.

I made an appt to take it back. No message, just the TPMS light that flashes then stays solid.

After you get this issue resolved, stay away from Walmart auto centers in the future. Too many so-called "techs" who were flipping burgers for a living just a month before.

Curious - what was the total cost? I've been living with the light for a couple of years.

The cost will vary based on where you are, so calling local tire shops would be more meaningful.

There is cost of the sensor [I suggest replace all 4] and labor for dismounting the tires and re-balancing them. It is best to replace them when you replace tires.

I replaced mine at Costco.

Salim
PS: typical life is 8-10yrs. If you are at yr 6 of sensor battery life, do the replacement early when you are replacing tires.

A lot if the repair manuals tell the tech that after the relearn procedure the vehicle needs to be driven and the light will turn off. Can’t really fault them for following the directions, but in most cases after the relearn if they leave the vehicle on and rescan each sensor with the scan tool the light will turn off. Every once in a while it requires more than that but it’s what solves most of my problems.
