Just recently my wife started hearing this tapping, knocking noise coming from the dash, behind the instrument panel. It sounds similar to an old cable operated speedometer that's worn out. However, it's not as rhythmic, and doesn't vary with speed. I drove it yesterday and here's what I discovered:
does not happen all the time. Sometimes it happens as soon as you crank it, other times not.
does not vary with HVAC on or off. When I hear it, turning the AC on or off does not change it
it is periodic, comes and goes. Last night it started as soon as we cranked the car, then at a stop sign it quit. Then at some point it started again, but didn't go away at the next stop. It was not making the noise when we arrived home.
The sound is like it might be part of a vacuum system diaphragm or something. I don't know what all is behind the dash. I can't get it to make the noise today, but last night it seemed to be above the ignition switch, left of the NAV and right of the Speedometer.
I need some suggestions as to where to start my triage, please . . . .
I have the same noise and it drives me crazy. lol
It goes away if I change the mode to different vents or recirculate button so thinking it might be the "mode damper servo".
Totally forgot about it cuz I don't hear it if I change modes.
Looks like it is buried in a god forsaken place deep in the dash but I haven't dug into it so maybe has easy access somewhere- hopefully someone knows.
I have this as well but you need to completely strip the dash to get to it. If the clicking is on the passenger side its much easier to get to apparently.
The fault is the end stop contact on the motor, they basically gum up with dust and when the contacts are made they don't actually make the circuit to stop the motor.

I went ahead and ordered an aftermarket servo on ebay for $30 because oem was almost $200 INSANE!
Was hoping someone does walk thru with pics before I dive in there so I can see if I want to fool with it. lol
There are youtubes for replacing the A/C expansion valve, which shows them removing the entire dash to get at the assembly. It is a pretty scary clip to say the least...

Yeah I'm hoping I can sneak it out of there by removing the trim around the gear shifter and reach back up in there.
Any further than that it's a big commitment. lol
What it takes to pull the "Suitcase" to access evap core/heater core/expansion valve, etc on our cars...
